(101 things to know when you go) ON SAFARI IN AFRICA: Paperback Edition

How to enjoy your safari!
This is the most wonderful book. I have recommended that my safari company recommend it to all its safari participants, at least the ones who’ve never been on safari before. It answers of lot of questions that newbies have, but I also think anyone on safari would enjoy it. I certainly did. It starts with travel requirements (including visas, vaxes, safe eating and drinking, etc.) and suggestions for before the trip, as well as tips and a packing list. But it’s not your typical “Lonely Planet-type” book. It doesn’t recommend places to stay or eat. It’s really about how to enjoy a safari! What I really loved were the short but complete and interesting descriptions of the appearance, physiology, and behaviors of most of the animals we’re likely to see. I never could keep all those darned antelopes straight, but now I have an easy reference for when I get mixed up.The author is a native Zimbabwean who used to own a lodge there and now lives in Australia. The style is conversational, and the book includes so much information in a completely readable way, unlike some other books I’ve read. There are some quirky facts thrown in (a rhino’s nasal passage is larger than its brain!).There are shorter sections on star-gazing, birding, cultural aspects of the people, and photography. It’s hard to believe this book covers so much in only 300+ pages. I bought it on Kindle so I will have it with me on my iPad on our safari.I can’t recommend this book strongly enough!!

Those who like to understand what they're seeing and experiencing will rejoice in these pages. A 5 star book!
This is a really well thought-out and written book that covers all aspects of traveling on safari, from the mundane but necessary what to pack to the much more interesting background on animals, birds and the African environment. The author put a lot of time into creating a book that will prepare safari-goers for their journey. It's not focused on a single region, park, or country, which I appreciated, and includes the best places to see or experience ___. Anyone who just wants to show up to a trip and isn't interested in learning may find it too informative, but those who like to understand what they're seeing and experiencing will rejoice in these pages. A 5 star book.

A must read for safari goers
This book is invaluable and a must read for anyone considering a safari in Africa. It covers every topic from the basics like immunizations and what to pack to what to do if you encounter a wild animal face to face. The book is honest in it's portrayal of the experience, not sugar coating the it When one has read this book, he will be totally prepared for what to expect including how rough the vehicle rides and hikes are. The author also does an excellent job of acquainting the reader with the various types of safaris; from roughing it to spa safaris. I wouldn't go on safari without reading this book..

Annoying formatting symbols
I downloaded this Kindle book several different ways to two Kindle reading devices and all present formatting symbols in the text that are annoying. You can still read the book and it has many good tips...if you are willing to read around the formatting symbols.

Chock-full of information!
This book contains ample knowledge regarding African wildlife, culture, geography, etc. Tips for what to pack were very helpful, as were the author’s insights into what to expect while actually on safari & in-camp. I’ve purchased a number of safari books, but this one seemed the most well-rounded for my needs. I also appreciated the maps, the glossary, and the photography tips.

Fantastic Book!
Thank you to the author of this book! We took this with us to Tanzania (on our kindle) and it really filled in all the gaps. Even our guide was interested in hearing excerpts on certain animals. (He was particularly intrigued by all the terms for animal "collectives"... like a group of zebra is a "dazzle", for example.) The packing list inside this book totally saved us. Also, the author's suggestions couldn't have been more on point. I can't recommend this book highly enough!

On Safari in Africa
Having travelled extensively in Africa - I found this guide to be both an easy and interesting read, answering all questions one would ever ask. It would have been illuminating when first visitng in 1995 had it been tucked in my backpack - just to understand that bird watching was as exciting an experience as searching for the Big Five amongst other things. On Safari in Africa has reminded me of the beauty of the African Continent and its people encountered on my journeys.
