I purchased NCEES PE Mechanical Engineering: HVAC and Refrigeration Practice Exam directly from NCEES and am very glad I did. It is representative of the exam problem types and level of difficulty on the actual exam but I can tell you not one of the problems in this exam is the same as any on the real exam. That is by design; NCEES wants you to be able to handle problems of any of these types, all within 6 minutes average per problem. Depending on your level of experience, some will be quick hits of a minute or less, others will be 15 minutes. After some months of study, evenings and weekends, including practice tests, I passed on my first try. This book was the baseline to fill in your gaps.I recommend that after some study, take this as a timed test, four hours AM, four hours PM with an hour between, which is the actual exam format. A great way to gauge your weaknesses, focus on your strengths but also learn to "take your time in a hurry"- get a handle on the trick questions, unit conversions and other ways of thinking the problems through.I also purchased the similar Michael Lindburgh "MERM" and HVAC & Refrigeration practice exam as well as those practice exams and guides published by Justin Kauwale, PE. My point in this is, take as many practice exams as you can, and use these problems with a friend to formulate similar but different problems. Also know that a lot of the problems seek different answers. For example, a question on a process, mixing, psycrhrometrics, etc. could easily ask you any number of "all true" outcomes. e.g. "What is the resulting wet bulb of"... "what is the resulting enthalpy of....", all for the very same problem. A good tool to keep your mind relaxed and nimble. You can do this.

I took the exam in Oct 2017 ( the new specification) and although it was helpful, it gave me a "false sense of security". I found the real exam much harder and needed to use ASHRAE handbooks to look for reference material - that this book DID NOT prepare me for.Unfortunately I didn't pass, but I do know what to do next time. I suggest having all 4 ASHRAE handbooks and tab/copy notes while working on this practice exams. I don't think the exam PRE-2017 had as much ASHRAE reference material in it.Just my opinion.
