1 Pole 40 AMP Heavy Duty AC Contactor Replaces Virtually All Residential 1 Pole Models

I have a 3-ton Amana A/C unit that is 23 years old. Over the past few weeks, I was aware of the HVAC system being Off, but that the compressor outside was still running, building frost on the cold side line. At first I just went to the Breaker Box and shut off the A/C breakers. Then I took the side cover off the A/C unit outside and "rapped" on the contactor. After 2 or 3 hits, the compressor shut off. In my case, the contactor was working well enough to turn On the unit, but the contacts would weld themselves tight together and not allow the unit to turn Off. This unfortunately caused many nights of poor sleep as I never knew when the next time the contactor would fail "On" again.As you are already aware, Amazon carries an exorbitant collection of contactors from which to choose, but I drilled my decision down to this Protactor contactor. In case you don't already know, basically all of these contactors are built with the same footprint and size, with the main differences being the coil operating voltage (24, 120, or 220VAC), the contactor (relay) contact ratings (from 25 to 40 Amp), and the number of poles that are required for the control circuit (1, 2, or 3).My contactor was a simple 1 pole circuit with a 24v coil and contacts rated @ 25 Amps for FLA (Full Load Amps). Therefore, if I can upgrade to a 40 Amp FLA contactor, it allows the contacts to live a much longer life with 60% greater contact area.I received this 40A Protactor within 2-days after ordering it and installed it right away. My A/C compressor and fan are now running better than ever! I really mean it! Before, with the worn out original contactor, the compressor used to literally groan and growl especially during the first few minutes of operating. Now, with the 40A Protactor in place, there is none of that, very smooth and quiet, as it should be. I thought I might need a new compressor, but now I realize that the old contactor was wasting energy across the contacts and not allow full voltage and current to the compressor unit. The A/C appears to also be running less in duration and less often, due to improved operation efficiency.My family is delighted and impressed that I was able to repair our A/C system with a part that cost less than $21 w/ Tax. Now no more worries about the contactor sticking in the On position! I totally recommend this contactor for anyone in a similar situation. It is worth its weight in gold!

Since the screw terminals for this contactor require the use of bare wire, I had to remove the fork terminals from the 240V power wires that attach to the top of the contacter. But this is certainly better than needing to add fork or ring terminals and not having them.

Did its job! Replaced and my air conditioner worked like new! And I did it all on my own! Great product! And I’m a woman and 51!

When working on something that runs on 240VAC it's really important to do things safely. Turn Off the breakers to the compressor and the inside unit before doing anything.This fixed my AC problem. Couple weeks ago during a late night storm my AC quit working. Or at least the compressor wouldn't come on. Inside unit seemed to be Ok. The compressor unit is about 8-9 years old, so I at first figured it was the starting capacitor - changed it out for a new one - no luck. There was a possibility that the low-voltage wiring might be the problem - its about four decades old. Check it - it was good.So I ordered a new contractor unit, based on the model/part number of the old one - which has been discontinued. The new one didn't look anything like the old one. It was actually a two-pole one instead of a single-pole. So I ordered one of these - based on appearance and specifications. Took about a half hour to install. Flipped back On the breakers - crossed my fingers and turned on my AC. Compressor chugged to life and cool air commensed to blow. Yea!One hitch in all of this. The label on the new piece shows the wiring mirrored to what my old part shows. So I had to make a decision - flip the wiring or hook it up like the old part. Tough decision. I went with doing it the way the old one was wired. And that seems to worked Ok.Side note. Looking at the old part - there is a little cover on the front. Opening that up you can see the relay contacts. Both contacts were heavily carbonized. My guess is I could have simply cleaned those contact points up a bit and gotten a few more years out of it. But still, for the price a whole new part is better than an almost ten year old one. I'm happy with my purchase.Including a photo of my old part with the mirrored wiring.

Great contactor got the ac back up and running without any complications. Easy to use.

Works great, but my unit originally had stranded wires with ring terminal. This contactor is made to connect to solid wire. I put straight non-insulated but connectors on my wires & crimped them to make this work.

Replaced my contactor switch on my central air unit. This switch was a quick install. If you're not used to doing electrical work, take a couple pictures before removal. I would advise using a multimeter to double check power is off after disconnecting the shut off, it is 240v going in. I like this switch better than my original because the contactor is sealed, original was an open design. My problem was after turning on the thermostat to call for ac,I had the 24v signal going out to the contactor. This in turn activated or closed the plunger on the switch. This would allow the 240v to continue into the condenser unit activating the compressor,I did not have the 240v at the top of the switch due to faulty contacts. Without a multimeter to check, you would think the switch was working because it did activate. If you're replacing this switch, I would also replace the capacitor unit at the same time. It's in the same spot and prone to failure also.
