I’ve been working with some uniform basswood in a wood carving class and this wood is very inferior. It has areas of hard wood that shred or crack on carving. I found that carving through these areas resulted in breaks and fragmentation. Not the uniform consistency that I’ve experienced and quite surprising to me.

Got this set for my son who is in cub scouts. Seems similar to other listings for basswood blocks. Basswood is supposed to be one of the best types of wood for carving because of its even consistency.Note this is technically a "hard wood" but relatively soft. Similar in hardness to pine (but much better for carving), don't expect something soft and spongy like balsa wood.

Got this for my nephew who has expressed an interest in whittling. With these blocks he can let his creativity run wild.
