does this unit have a optical out

No it doesn't, I received my CVD512a today 12/17/17, it has no optical output I'm sending it back, it was the most important feature for me. This item desperately needs a picture of the back of the unit. I think I've learned an important lesson, do not buy audio/stereo without a picture of the back of the unit.

Can you hook this to a stereo to only play CD's?

I used to play DVD movie and it works fine. I never tried hook this to stereo but I think it can do as it has audio jack as well

Dont give out your ard number to anone, call your credit card issuer/bank or go in person to have it changed. You can add it as a new payment method on your account. But never give it out to anyone, especially here. Dont listen to that person that said to give it to them, and they'll change it.

Do I need to purchase any additional cables for this DVD player? I have a standard flat screen.

I don't know about needing more or different ones. I have an older TV so I just used the cables that were sent with it. Sorry, I couldn't be more help.
