Perfect fit for a 24 year old Challenger brand pickup tool box
These were a perfect fit for a 24 year old Challenger brand pickup truck tool box. These went right on in place of the original Lift-O-Mat struts and worked like a charm. As I saw in some other reviews of similar struts, the force of these is more than adequate to open the lid smartly. There was also a 60 lb. version that would have been probably been overkill for my application. If you have a larger, heavier lid, you might want to consider those. Given that these attach to the middle of the width of the lid and the mechanical advantage the lid therefore has on these, even with a supposed 100 lbs. of combined force (2 x 50 lbs. each), it is easy to close the lid with only one hand. I used a digital luggage scale to measure the closing force required. At the start, with the lid raised all the way, it took 10.25 lbs. of force to move the lid. At the end, just before the lid was closed, this dropped to 7.75 lbs. This was on an early mid August evening with an outdoor temperature of 84 degrees F. In the winter, with freezing cold weather, I expect those numbers will drop slightly as most gas struts loose some of their effectiveness in the cold. I wouldn’t want to use anything lighter than this because I’d be concerned that the lid may not lift on it’s own in the winter months.Measure your originals carefully for closed length, open length, and hole diameter. This size was perfect for me. The 10.2mm hole diameter is very close to 3/8” (10mm = 0.4016”, 3/8 = 0.3875”). If you think the original hole in yours looks like 3/8” this is probably the right size hole. The 10.2mm number seemed somewhat standard on the ones I looked at here. I used a caliper to measure inside diameter of the originals and it came out to .40” on the original units so I knew I was safe. The closed length number may be tricky to get. Mine were completely discharged so I could slide them back and forth with 2 fingers. If yours still have a charge, do not try to compress them. They can be quite dangerous when they are compressed and not installed for use.My pictures are of the replacement units installed and operating.

Just what I needed
Looking around everywhere trying to find these shocks for my toolbox lid, some places wanting over $50 for them and here i find them for less than $20. And they're exactly what I needed. HIGHLY recommend these for your toolbox lid for the full size casket style. Not too strong nor too weak. I'm not sure how long they'll last as durability is a question but for this price once a year you could replace them and, I don't know about you but I'D be happy.
