Excelent book, bad title
Better to be named Modern Literature from Spanish Speaking American Countries. One cannot ignore that portuguese speaking Brazil is part ( and what a part) of Latin America.Brazilian literature suffered the same influences, in general, than the rest of the region although keeping some peculiarities. And it is pity not to have received the enlighted analysis of Echeverria.

Perfect Intro.
Echevarria is the top scholar in the field, and this book is lucid, concise, informative, and helpful. I couldnāt imagine a better version!

Nice overview, but...
....it's just that. An overview. The book fulfills the title's premise and offers a nice introduction, but personally, I feel like a more in-depth exploration of boom and truly modern literature is needed.

Broad overview of modern male Spanish Latin American writers
Omits modern Brazilian portuguese literature and women Latin American writers. Last chapter inaccurately states that BolaƱo had an heroin addiction. Comments on politics strong, frequent and biased enough as to be obtrusive.
