New Edition of Eurpidies
Oxford has published a new edition of the plays of Euridies translated by modern poets. They are exciting to read. The volume is part of an Oxford series of the plays of the great ancient Greek tragdians. Each play is proceeding by a insightful introduction which places the work in its historical context, as well as within the works of the author, and offers commentary on the plot and characters of the drama. The translations here for enjoyable reading. If you have not picked up these plays since college, its time to try them again.

Kindle edition unusable
I just ordered the Kindle edition of this book, and had to return it the next day. It is unreadable on the Kindle. The font size varies, even on a single display page, and cannot be adjusted via the normal keyboard command. Fortunately, amazon accepted the return without any problem, but I have to say that the whole situation leaves something of a sour taste. We've heard lots of reports about the way amazon exercises very little quality control in the production and issuance of these kindle items. This is just further evidence that, from amazon's point of view, a book is identical to any other item for sale, whether a comb or a kettle. That amazon is gradually maneuvering itself into a position where it controls so much of the market in books should, in view of their lack of concern with regard to the quality of what they are flogging, be disturbing to anyone who cares about culture and its gradual erosion. Amazon is part of the problem, driven as it is by financial concerns, and with careless disregard for other values. Literature as shmatta.
