An excellent book on Hindustani music of North India. It delves into theory, taal, raag structure, and explains all aspects of the Indian music notation. It has a great glossary of terms in the back too. It also contains several notated raags. The book is very insightful in general. Each chapter contains colorful quotes from famous musicians in Hindustani music. A great book and so far my favorite book on the subject. I use it about every day myself. Very good.

This is a great book. Even though I am not a musician, I love Northern Indian Classical Music. This book does a good job explaining the theory behind the music. Like everything you pay for quality. As good as this book is I belive that $59.00 is way to expensive. Wait till the price comes down, or you can get a used copy. Don't pay full price.

great book for beginners. Would be 5 stars if it had a CD of the exercises along with it. Still recommended to add to your collection though.

This is a must-have, not just for reference on your library shelf, but as a practical workbook - which simulates the first year's study at the famous Ali Akbar Khan college of music in California (as the title declares).What most appeals is the clarity of the editing by George Ruckert - himself a formidable performer, teacher and academic on the subject. Peppered with enjoyable photos and quotes from Khan-sahib himself, this book makes the learning experience as close as it can to being with a master, and would be a valuable aid even if you do have the real "guru" experience.

Like the curate's egg, good in parts. Could be shorter, especially if there are to be another 49 volumes!
