Will this work with series x?

I don't know the answer to this question for certain, but I can say that Xbox One controllers will still work with the Series X, so at the least, you'll still be able to use it for those. As an owner of an Xbox One and (hopefully) future owner of a Series X, I hope the answer is yes, but would happily buy a Series X version to add to this one.

Can you charge the two extra batteries without the controllers being on the docking station?

Yes you can it well worth the money

No this charging dock doesn't come with any controllers, the picture is just showing how the dock would look like set up with the controllers plugged in.

What type of brand of AC adapter do you recommend for this device?

It is entirely untrue that it comes with an AC adapter. I do not have one to recommend to you, as I plugged mine into the Xbox One unit, but the previous answer is incorrect.
