About the item

RARE JUDAICA with a DARK HISTORY - Sacramental bread, sometimes called the host (Latin: hostia), is used in the Christian ritual of Holy Communion. The consecrated bread is said to embody the blood of Jesus. In the Middle Ages Jews were often accused of desecrating the host which brought thousands to the stake. They were alleged to steal the host or to acquire it by purchase or bribery, to break it or seethe it, and to stick knives into it or transfix it, whereupon it began to bleed. The blood was even alleged to have been used to prepare matzos (Jewish bread), with or without the addition of Christian children's blood. Even when such an accusation was supported only by testimony of a thief, a disreputable woman, a recent convert, or some one having a grudge against the accused Jews, the alleged perpetrators were put on trial, and, on evidence that was often preous, or after a confession exacted by torture, were condemned and burned, sometimes with all other Jews in the community. This extraordinary and rare original 1922 German currency set consisting of 3 large notes dwells on this very theme, using medieval woodcuts to tell the story of the Jews of Sternberg in 1492. The first note shows the German Priest Peter Daene selling the consecrated host (sacramental wafers) to the Jews. The second shows the Jews cutting the wafers apart with knives, spilling the red blood (of Christ?) over their food preparation table. More Jews are seated at the adjacent dining table, apparently waiting to be served a meal containing the blood. A starkly bizarre image that is certainly unprecedented in the design of circulating currency. The third noteshows the "inevitable" outcome of the actions shown on the prior two: the Jews being burned alive at the stake. The title says it all: "The Fire Death of the Host Defilers of Sternberg in 1492" According to legend Peter Daene was excommunicated and also burned at the stake. Crisp CU condition and very rare
