Lutterloh System The Golden Rule Sewing Pattern

I love this system. There are no instructions for each garment, so you'll either need some prior experience sewing, a friend or relative that sews, find a pattern similar to the piece you're making (find a shirt pattern if you're making a shirt), or my least favorite is using a good sewing book. Trust me, find a relative/friend/neighbor that sews and you will have an instant mentor. The best part about this system is that the fit is terrific with maybe a few minor tweaks and you can make clothes for everyone you know with just this book. The only negative is my book did not include the latest supplements. The most recent was May 2017 so my styles are a year out-of-date. However, there are plenty of styles I can use and of course you can change up any pattern to add features (adding features is not for beginners). Drafting the patterns is a fun process and as there are no requirements listed for fabrics and notions, you're free to use the fabric you think will work instead of stressing about finding a fabric on the list. The styles are modern, and not very classic, though you will find a few classic patterns. Most patterns are for ladies, so if you want more patterns for children or men it is best you get supplements.This book is really designed for those confident in their sewing abilities, and are able to sew a pattern together without instructions. It is also designed for the seamstress who demands the perfect fit each and every time. Also you can mix and mach pattern pieces from different patterns to create your very own unique style, this is just not possible with most other patterns.This is also, a great value giving you many patterns, enough for a lifetime. Very good value as it also includes the curves. If you love to sew, this is the perfect item to get.

The system requires two measurements to help you generate your fitted pattern off the template. The process assumes that you have a certain set of proportions that may or may not be the case - a lot of us sew because we are particularly "gifted" in one or more areas of our bodies & you will still have to make the pattern alterations your regularly make for any non-Lutterloh pattern to accommodate your "gifts".The system is fun to use, and easy to understand. I do think a lot of their designs are very dated & wish they'd get over the 80's, but a lot of that can be worked around with some shoulder adjustments. Hire some junior designers and bust out a few trendy things, for gosh sakes.That bein' said, I will be making their traditional Bavarian vest for my traditional German husband. :)

I absolutely love my Lutterloh System. I've made a couple of things from it and they fit perfectly. Unlike ready-to-make store bought patterns, this system doesn't give you step by step directions. The patterns have codes on them so you know exactly what to do and the front general instructions tell you everything you need to do to do buttons, sleeves, etc. Some may consider this intimidating, especially if you don't know how to sew clothing. YouTube is a great resource if you aren't sure how to do a tailored sleeve or a jacket lining. Not all of the 280 styles in this system are my taste, but the majority I can adapt to suit my style. I am absolutely delighted on how the patterns fit me, because they are custom fit FOR me; or my daughters, son, husband and grandchild. I will never buy a commercial clothing pattern again.

Rulers are great and wealth of patterns are fantastic however, they are printed on regular thin paper (roughly 5x7) so all have to be enlarged onto cardstock before using. No directions so plan on already knowing garment construction. Note that the rulers are in metric.

I wanted to make a top. I took the measurements and followed the directions exactly. It was way to small. I used the vest as suggested but to no availe. I don't evem know how much to add to correct the problem

I teach sewing and bought this so I could check it out and talk intelligently about it. Made a pair of pants for one of my "normally" shaped clients and bang - they fit very nicely. They hung straight, and needed some fine-tuning with the darting around the waist and hem, but other than that, they were good to go. Uses a remarkable system to make a pattern that is your size. You do need to have some experience with sewing and how to put a pattern together, but for a group of patterns that will fit pretty darn well right out of the box (or on your first draft), this is a great product.
