Description

Forbidden Planet is the granddaddy of tomorrow, a pioneering work whose ideas and style would be reverse-engineered into many cinematic space voyages to come. Leslie Nielsen plays the commander who brings his space-cruiser crew to Planet Altair-4, home to Dr. Morbius (Walter Pidgeon), his daughter (Anne Francis), a dutiful robot named Robby and to a mysterious terror. Featuring sets of extraordinary scale and the first all-electronic musical soundscape in film history, Forbidden Planet is in a movie orbit all its own.

Seminal Science Fiction Film

If you're a fan of Science Fiction movies and have not seen this, you need to. Everything, and I mean everything that followed it lifted heavily from it.Plus, Anne Francis in her absolute prime, Leslie Nielsen when he had dark hair. Earl Holliman in what was probably the most light-hearted role he ever did, Walter Pidgeon at his pontificating best, James Best (Roscoe P. Coltrane from the Dukes of Hazzard series) in an early role, and probably a dozen other actors and actresses you'll recognize. The idea of CGI wasn't even a pipe dream when this was made (1956). Everything you see is either prop effects or direct manipulation of the film post-processing and it's amazing how well it holds up.

The film itself made history by treating the science fiction genre seriously with an intelligent script, good cast

Wow! This restored Blue-Ray edition is fabulous. This film was a masterpiece and ground breaker to begin with and now it has had the restoration it deserves. The film itself made history by treating the science fiction genre seriously with an intelligent script, good cast, and well thought out special effects. The fact the electronic music made its film debut with this movie adds to the films unique stature. However, the subtle moments of humor should not be forgotten either for example, Robby the robot's little burp when he analyzes the cook's whisky. I would remind younger viewers that this film can't be and shouldn't be compared to modern day computer generated effects movies but when you consider the date this film was released and combine all the above mentioned elements, Forbidden Planet holds its own and truly stands alone in the world of science fiction film.

I was pleased to find this in a BluRay format

I was pleased to find this in a BluRay format. It is a very good print. Being a fan of Star Trek, I have an appreciation for this movie which many consider to be Star Trek's prototype. It was one of the first science fiction movies of the 1950's to take itself seriously. While most science fiction of that era was about invading monsters, be they giant "monoliths" or space cucumbers, "Forbidden Planet" suggested that a future could exist where we went out to explore the universe in peace and perhaps the biggest "monster" was locked up inside of us.

Best Sci Fi movie ever when considering the date

Forbidden Planet is a landmark sci fi movie! In this relatively short movie, it has over 50 'firsts!!!!' Really. I'd only been able to find it on low resolution disks, etc; until now. The Blu Ray version was so nice to see and it comes with a lot of interesting 'extras.'

An Excellent Print of a 50s Sci-Fi Classic!

I'd been seeking a re-issue of the film for years, and finally decided to cough up the bucks for the Blu-Ray print. Everything about it is spectacular, from the stereo soundtrack to the colors and the sharpness of the images to the special features (most of which I'd never seen). If this is one of your favorites from the past (or maybe your childhood) it's a very worthwhile purchase.

A movie I watch at least once a year

Not only one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time, but a classic across all genres. Brilliant SFX, a great script, a truly terrifying monster plus lots of extras on the blu-ray. Essential!

Delivery ahead of schedule

Delivery was ahead of the scheduled arrival and in good shape. The movie was great and the special features were outstanding. Picture was beautiful and better than when I saw it in the 50's. A GREAT science fiction movie advanced for its day.
