Straight replacement for 20 year old EcoWater unit
Having managed to keep my 25 year old EcoWater softener running for far too long, I decided to replace instead of repair this time around. This Tapworks unit is manufactured by EcoWater and uses the same basic valve head with a faster acting motor, which is terrifyingly noisy the first time you hear it switch. It was very straight forward to swap the units over, with the pipework still being identical after all these years. The salt bin only manages to swallow a whole 25kg bag of salt on the first fill or if you let it run very low.The old softener had a useful control panel which allowed me to monitor my water use in litres, see how much softening capacity was left and decide if I wanted to delay or advance the next regeneration. As far as I can work out, this model only has a 'Regen now' function with none of the other useful features. The salt refill indicator is pretty useless, but the interior light is handy.I suspect that this unit is regenerating every night because my water use is often somewhere between 900-1300 litres per day and the capacity is about 2000 litres @ 300ppm. The lack of any display function to let me know if a regen has been done means I can't be entirely sure. This initially worried me because I had to be quite hands on with my old softener and the capacity would fall off a cliff beyond its theoretical maximum, leaving me with either hard water or needing to run a regen during the day. I used a hard water test kit to monitor the softened water during the first few weeks of operation and tweaked the hardness setting hoping that I would be getting the maximum benefit from each regen and save salt. On reflection, I'm not sure if this was at all necessary because the unit has been very frugal on salt and the water has remained soft at all times.I have concluded that this new model must have a far more intelligent brine control system than my old EcoWater. It is a blessing to no longer need to worry if we are running out of capacity as it has been operating flawlessly. All I need do is keep an eye on the salt and refill it once every four to six weeks.

A good replacement
I purchased this to replace one we have used with no problems or need for servicing for nearly 25 years. It was still working well but we thought probably was nearing the end of its time. This was a good replacement as it fitted the space perfectly. Not many items can be changed like for like after so many years. However what has been changed are the connection hoses which are shorter and did not reach. The plumber had to source longer hoses to fit.Now installed I hope it will work for another 25 years. I will not know the answer as I will not be here by then.I am sure it will see me out.

One month in and perfectly soft water
If you live in a hard water area buy one. Just make sure drinking water is piped off before the softener 🍵

Effective option
Original model worked fine for 15 years until power cut blew the computer board. The replacement unit comes with shorter 500mm long hoses and 22mm push fit connections. You need to take the manifold from the old unit for the old longer 1000mm 3/4 inch fittings washing machine type hoses to fit. Beware buying cheap1500mm long washing machine hoses on Amazon (you cant find 1000mm ones) - more than a 75% chance that they will leak from the hose crimping to the connector or the central fitting will drip. The Handbook is light on detail in places. The light on the panel stays on permanently (which is not mentioned) and the light button only operates a light in the salt compartment. Trickle low level flow will not operate the automatic recharge count meaning mains water will slowly dilute the stored softened water until next time there is a recharge. Need to replace any old style ball valve in a loft tank with a modern fluid master unit, price £18, for automatic recharge to work effectively. There is a deep menu under the OK button (long push) which gives further options such as recharge every X days, how many recharges have been carried out, how many days the unit has been in operation etc. Its still one of the best units on the market.

Good softener poor pipework
Why have you put those horrible new indeed pipes on to short kink easily. And the waste pipe that must never kink or the unit does not work sent out with the most kinkable pipe any body can find, this must be cheaper for you, I required a plumber to alter indeed pipes, causing unnecessary expense, thankfully the unit is good and works well, stop trying to cheapen a good product, know of other people not happy.
