My Moen shower valve has lower pressure when on the hot side, and progressively higher pressure when moved toward the cold side. Will new cart fix th?

I’m not a Moen rep but I have replaced these units for my personal properties. Before you replace the cartridge, you need to verify your water flow. If the hot water flow is low in your sinks and your bathtub similarly to the shower, it may be something other than the valve like obstructed pipes. Do you have hard water? Are the pipes pretty old? If yes to one or the other, you may have a different problem. If your shower faucet handle rotates easily from hot to cold, your cartridge is probably ok. If there is resistance, it may need a new one. You will need a cartridge puller tool (around $15) from Amazon, HD or Lowes that will enable you to extract and inspect it. If it is in good shape, you can apply some plumbers grease and reinsert it. If the rubber flaps will not stay in place or are stressed, you should replace it. $15 for a rebuild kit, $50 for a new cartridge.  There are youtube videos that will show how to pull the cartridge that are helpful.  If your hot water is weaker than your cold water on all of your house faucets, it is unlikely a new cartridge will help but it won’t hurt either as long as you don’t mind spending the money.

Does this work on the off-brand cartridges?

I would think it should, since the no-name should be a straight-up exchange, with identical leading dimensions.  I replaced my off-brand cartridge with a genuine Moen (which they will send you for free, if you have the time to wait for it to come) and I discarded the hardware store cheapo, so I can't check to be certain.  My local hardware actually told me that they'd sell me another no-namer, but that I should really call Moen and get the free one - they even looked up the Moen customer service number for me!  The Moen is a much better quality unit - less flash and other molding defects on the plastic, etc. - but to all appearances, they were the same size.  "Go thou and do likewise", if you can afford to wait a few days for the genuine article to come in the mail.  Get the rebuild kit to keep on hand "just in case".
