TP-Link N300 Ceiling Mount Wireless Access Point (EAP110)

The EAP series could have been great...
Update - 11/16. 2 >> 3 stars. It looks like tplink read this review and fixed a few negatives...but it's still far from perfect. The Good:+ Price - lowest in its class (when it's $50)+ Coverage - 26dBm max tx is outstanding (US firmware version only)+ Stable connection and has been relatively reliable+ Included poe injector seems high quality+ Can be managed through web ui and/or controller software+ Many configuration settings+ 2 year warrantyThe Bad:- High latency - using only a single EAP access point, with a single client, on a very simple home network, in an environment with nearly zero interference, I was consistently getting over double the ping during speed tests of any other access point I have ever used - even tplink's own cheapest $20 consumer ap. I tested this dozens of times with many different settings and even exchanged it to no avail. Considering this is arguably the most important factor in a connection (fyi, this is what actually makes your internet feel fast) it's astounding that tplink was able to mess it up this badly. I can't imagine it would be any better in a more demanding situation.Update - They still haven't fixed the latency issue even with the latest available update. You don't really notice it just browsing but it does become an issue during time sensitive things like gaming/voip. Tplink, what have you been doing for the past year??- Software is buggy and inefficient. Plus the layout is all over the place - while the layout is still better than ubiquiti unifi, the usually straightforward tplink layout is going. Not a big deal since you mostly just set it and forget it, but still...Update - DO NOT USE THE EAP Controller utility! While the layout is significantly better than it was, it's severely crippled - you can't even change basic settings such as Tx power. Instead, I recommend using the EAP Discovery utility to find the IP address that was assigned to the AP by the dhcp server(your router) and configuring it through the web ui. If you have so many access points that you need a centralized utility to manage them, then you shouldn't be using these APs in the first place...- Latest USA firmware version 151022 or newer is locked. Cannot be downgraded at all and can only be upgraded with firmware from the tplink usa site. The tplink GLOBAL site always has newer firmware with the latest fixes so it's too bad you can't use those.Update - Firmware update still locks you to a country, but they released the same firmware across all countries with the only significant difference being max Tx power. I suggest going with the US version as it has a max Tx of 26dBm vs only 20 on the EU version. You can always lower it in the web ui if you need to.- The country cannot be changed on firmware 151022 or newer in the web ui. If you try to change it in the controller software, it will crash and you have to hard reset it.Update - Fixed - they just removed the option.- Does not use standard 802.3af poe so you must use the included injector. This is expected at this price point but it's something to keep in mind when installing. If you want to use a standard poe switch, you have to spring for the eap120 or higher. The Ugly Conclusion:Since we exclusively use tplink business class switches(which work flawlessly), we had high exceptions for their first business class indoor access point... On paper it appears to be equal to or better than any of its competitors, and in some ways it is. Unfortunately, it looks like tplink rushed it too quickly to market because it has some significant shortcomings. While the wonky software and not being able to change the firmware or country is annoying, the high latency is a HUGE deal breaker. Until tplink fixes it(may take a long time, if ever) I cannot recommend it.Update - I still stand by my original conclusion. While the complete overhaul of the UI makes it nicer to look at and maybe a little easier to configure, it wasn't the priority. They should have used those resources to fix lingering bugs and make the underlying firmware more efficient/streamlined(which would hopefully fix the latency issue and anything else that could potentially affect stability). Maybe in the next update...next year...Side note - For 5 months I was using Unifi UAP access points. They seemed perfect at first - they are also cheap and seemingly well made with a very active forum and timely firmware updates...and their marketing department is excellent. The very active forum is because of all the problems people have(especially with apple products) and the timely updates(which are sometimes completely unusable) are the patches to fix all the problems - it's like being part of a never-ending beta. I switched back to the EAP as my main AP - which for the past couple months has been stable. If you're reading this review deciding on a $50 "enterprise" grade access point, I strongly recommend against Unifi if stability is a priority.

Not user friendly
As of now, I am only giving this 3 stars. The setup of this unit has become a nightmare. The instructions that come with the unit are worthless in my opinion. After going online and reading the manual several times, I still could not get access to this unit. Why they cannot not just make these "plug and play" is beyond me. I will say the unit puts out a strong signal, and this will be a good unit if I can ever get it up and running. Wise to the weary, the POE unit is PASSIVE, and just any old POE switch will not work. Wish I knew this before I purchased. Also, the LAN port is on the side of the unit. It is quite obvious this unit is designed for wall mount, even though it has a ceiling bracket. Woop tee doo doo. My lan cable is blue and there is no way to hide the cable. Sorry TP-Link, the LAN port should be on the back of the unit. For those who are having trouble with set-up like me, good luck in calling! The line was busy for about 3 hours. I ended up just sending an e-mail and got an answer within an hour. So, until I have this running. It's 3 stars and that is because i'm being nice. If you look at many of the other reviews, everyone else says the setup is difficult. TP-Link needs to take a lesson here and help! For those who want to set this up for HOME USE, please follow these hints -1) Disable or turn off any firewall you have on your computer2) Connect this unit DIRECTLY to your computer3) Look at the properties of your network and right click on the TP-Link unit4) Manually change the IP address of your computer to 198.168.0.1005) Run the EAP discovery software and connect to the EAP1106) Once you can connect, then start up Exployer, Firefox, etc and type 192.168.0.254 in the address line7) This should connect to the unit, and enter the user name of admin and the password of admin8) You can now gain access to the unit to change the SSID, password, etc. Save your settings9) Disconnect the unit from the computer and re-activate / change the IP address from above. This should work. Good Luck!UPDATE: Just found out that this UNIT WILL NOT work with a POE switch. It will ONLY work with its included POE injector. Do not waste your money on this. Thus, 1 star now.

Works great - had troublee with the setup
A little cumbersome to set up, some Google searching to get it provisioned. Apparently when provisioning you need to use the default password and not the password you have assigned to the device. Once it was set up it provided an excellent access point for my wireless camera system. Would have been five stars if I did not have to struggle with the setup.

does the trick!
Loving this (for now) after my ubiquiti AP died. Funny thing is, the controller software is almost identical to ubiquiti, so I have to assume it's the same company. Easy setup and I was good to go in a short amount of time. All of my heavy appliances (video streaming, etc) are gigabit wired, so I just use this for my phone, tablet, laptop, etc... Nothing fancy.

Good Range and Feature Set for the Price
Good little AP. Easy to deploy and has an easy to use interface. My only knock would be the absence of instructions for more advanced features, but overall it is a good product with decent range and feature set for the low price. Would buy again.

I will be buying more in the future
I've been using this access point for a while now with no issues. It doesn't feel as solid as Cisco and is way lighter. The advantages to this item vs Cisco are : Lower Cost, Stand-alone, no programming skills required, no special cables or software needed to configure

works great and fairly easy to set up
works great and fairly easy to set up. I hit one minor road block during setup but a quick google search gave me the answer I needed. Calling customer service was worthless, glad I took to the web for answers.

Fantastic Access Point
Amazing product and very easy to setup. It covers 1200 Sqft, first floor of the house with multiple walls without any drop in speed or signal strength. And ground floor and terrace on 2nd floor with 70% signal strength. Best part is it has a POE adapter and that make it easy to mount on ceilings with a single ethernet cable for data and power. It's not dualband and will support only 2.4Ghz.

EAP110, EAP120
