Complete Frazetta Johnny Comet

Wonderful artwork- story fun. But mostly worth it for the art. The use of line and shade is a fantastic example of what can be achieved.

Have been a fan of Frazetta's work for years, such talent.

I've heard of Frank Frazetta before and seen some of his later work. Not a big fan of his later work which, just for me, was a little too dark.But this..this...Johnny Comet comic strip is so cool! Frazetta clearly outdid himself on this syndicated comic! The deep detail of Frazetta's backgrounds are a visual study-guide for any aspiring artist on how to do backgrounds! Man, I was hooked from the first page! Frazetta draws his heroes very bold and dashing. His ladies are sheer "curva-licious" eye candy and his villains look like they crawled out of the rat infested shadows to do evil!Plus, his supporting characters' facial and body designs have got my art-pencils all ready out so that I can study from his phenomenal work!I'm pissed that those reading the Johnny Comet strip way back in the day didn't appreciate true genius of Frazetta's skill!(..Ha!..Must've been other stuff going on at the time. LOL!) Yet, it's Vanguard that has done a pretty slick job of putting together the dailies and the Sunday comics in one book for the old and new fans of Johnny Comet! Nice quality of the paper and the book is a respectable size, too.THANK YOU, VANGUARD, AND PLEASE DO GIVE US MORE!I WOULD LOVE TO BUY OTHER SYNDICATED NEWSPAPER COMICS STRIPS IN THEIR ENTIRETY IN BLACK/WHITE WITH THE COLOR SUNDAYS, VANGUARD!I REALLY LOVE THE OLD DETECTIVE,COWBOYS,ADVENTURE,AND SCI-FI NEWSPAPER COMICS OF YESTERYEAR!(Personally?..I'M HOPING FOR A FULL REPRINT OF THE JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA SYNDICATED COMIC STRIP UNDER THE VANGUARD BRAND!)Peace! I was so glad to get to be able to read all the Johnny Comet newspaper comic strips in this volume, which I don't think had ever appeared before. Frazetta's pencils and brush-strokes are just awe-inspiring. A lot of love and rendering went into every panel. Altho it has not been noted before, if you look close at the captions you will see that Frazetta casually rendered all the lettering with a blunt-tip pen, making it simple, but effective and elegant, calligraphy. Of immense value also are the color Sunday strips in the back. Nice, big, hardback edition on slick paper. You might want to ask Amazon to protect the book on all sides rather than just throw it in a box with a bubble pack, because my copy came with one corner damaged, and two pages inside were subsequently torn. Of little value is the self-aggrandizing editorial: the publisher is justified in taking considerable pride in himself for many of his artbooks, but an introduction detailing what good friends he was with the artist (and other artists) seeems a bit beside the point. I would have appreciated more information on who provided the color strips and how they were reproduced. Or even some notes on the creative process: did Frazetta plot and then draw the strips to be later dialogued by the scripter, or did he start with a script or outline from the writer? Of much greater value is William Stout's article (in the middle of the book?) detailing much of Frazetta's history. This book is highly recommended for Frazetta fans.
