Three in One Wooden Thai Chess/Checkers/Backgammon Set - Handmade

This set is wonderful. The pieces are all well made and the set contains my favorite games. I can carry the set with me and have three games available where ever I go - inside or outside. My favorite place to play one of these games is at Stone Mountain Georgia which is a beautiful setting for all three of the games - in view of a huge stone mountain and a beautiful and tranquil lake.Marilyn

For 45 dollars, this is a great chess set. Hand carved in Thailand, and you can see from the picture the pieces are elegant and the board is THICK. The wood is some indigenious asian variety, so it may not excite those looking for oak, but its nice and it's almost authentic. My only complaint is that the board is black and blank checkered only...I would have preferred, and paid more for, a reverse side pattern of all blank squares like authentic Thai Chess sets use. The peices are slightly smaller than you might expect...NOT tournament size...but at 45 bucks for an imported, hand carved chess set with a massive (almost butcher block)playboard, you really can't complain at all.

It's pretty nice for a hand carved set, the pieces all seem to be symmetrical, unlike some other hand crafted items which tend to have a number of flaws. I wasn't expecting the backgammon board on the flip side, however. I also wasn't expecting the pieces to look differently than they do in the picture. The tops of mine (the part of the pieces which look like stacked cones) are actually much thicker than in the picture, and the base of the pieces are a solid cylinder (without the double ridged look they have in the picture). Overall, I'm still looking forward to playing with it despite these unexpected differences.

I've had a plastic set for a number of years, so was ecstatic when the wooden one was advertised. Feels so much more solid, like a professional set and not a cheap toy. The set and board are very, very nice. A western chess set of similar quality would have cost at least double the cost of this set. Well worth the money if you want a quality set to use while playing Thai chess.
