Fodder Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) is an important quick growing legume, which is used as fodder crop for green fodder, hay making, open-grazing and also for silage mixtures with Maize or Sorghum. It’s suitable for all the seasons and all the soils except sandy soil anywhere in India. An also suitable for dry land areas during rainy season. It’s susceptible to water logging conditions. The feeding value of cowpea forage is high. It can support growth and milk production up to 800 ml/day, without any concentrate supplement. It’s good fodder to cow, buffalo, goat, sheep and hay to horse. 7-8 kg require for one acre and spacing is 2x1.5 cm for single seed. Duration is 55-60 days, crop height is 100-120 cm and Green fodder yield is 8.5-9 tons/acre. A ent level having high Protein content (21.56 %), Crude Fibre content is 26.70 %, Calcium is 1.40 % and Phosphorus content is 0.35 %. High dry matter yield (1.5t/acre). It’s also used as green manure crop and as cover crop in ations, having high Nitrogen fixations. Average Nitrogen levels green manure resulted in an increase of 18.5% in the fresh biomass. Note: Weeding is not needed for this crop, its covers the land very soon and kills the weeds by smoothing.
