A work of GENIUS
These ballets bring out the style of three books of Virginia Woolf by fusing the choreography, music sets and backdrop to each one of them. She was interested not in giving a narrative but to enable an event in a person's life to be connected to all their memories of the past. I saw this live twice at the Opera House and was immediately moved by the production. This is even better brought out on Blu-Ray because the camera focuses on facial expressions that cannot be seen so clearly from the audience. I cannot fault this recording in any way since the camera work, sound, lighting are excellent. It is important to play the extras on this disc since this will lead to a better understanding of the three works. This is a disc that I would want to play regularly.

Stunning both visually and sonically
This is one of the best releases from Opus Arte so far. I love the combination of Max Richters music, the dance choreography and the set designs - they work great together. The Blu-ray release brings out a lot of fine detail that you would miss on the DVD edition, so buy the Blu-ray instead.Highly recommended!

Wayne MacGregor's best ballet
This is Wayne MacGregor's best ballet. It plays to his strengths - an ability to create mood and emotion through muscle-testing choreography- and minimises his weaknesses - an inability to create a strong narrative thread. In this, he is helped immeasurably by Max Richter's hypnotically involving score. By the end, an almost unbearably moving story has been played out . And the Royal Ballet has cast the production from strength- even Natalia Osipova makes a brief but explosive appearance in the second" Orlando" act. It is invidious to single out individuals but Sarah Lamb creates some amazing body shapes and the remarkable Allesandra Ferri is very moving in the title role. Ross MacGibbon's production looks good and the shot selection is sensible. Indeed, he clarifies some of the action in the very complex "Orlando" act. It looks glorious in BluRay and my only criticism is that the sound is a bit recessed. You really need to go to Richter's DG recording to experience the sound at its fullest. The extras are illuminating, if a little brief. This is modern dance at its best and it repays close and considered scrutiny over a period of time. I've already played it many times since I bought it a month ago. Highly recommended.
