mine came with no directions.  How long should I put this in the microwave for?

Short answer: 3:30 to 3:45 or 4:00
Long answer: I use a little more than 3 full tablespoons of large/regular kernel popcorn, such as Goya yellow ( which I think is one of the best).
A little olive oil.
4 minutes in microwave. BUT I listen, that is the key.  Somewhere about 3 1/2 minutes, the popping slows down. As soon as I hear less than a few pops aver 2-3 seconds, I turn off the microwave. 
Then I add seasonings as per creative spirit. Start with some onion powder, paprika, salt, and ...
Perfect popcorn. Every time!

Question 2

Would this be considered the same as air popped popcorn?

From a calorie-perspective... AIR POPPED popcorn and NAKED popcorn popped with this popper are IDENTICAL.

One huge difference you'll notice, though, is the sound level!  Air poppers often tend to be very noisy and this one is only as noisy as your microwave.

Does the popcorn taste like movie theatre popcorn or does it taste like it was popped in the microwave?

That's mostly up to you, depending on how you SEASON it during or after popping.

You can add a lot of different flavors, in varying amounts until you get it exactly as you like it. 
Three points of guidance:

1)  Flavor from movie popcorn comes from OIL and SALT  (you can add either/both of those into the popper before popping, and/or add salted flavoring afterwards)

2)  "Microwave popcorn" as in the stuff in bags that flop around and steam open in a microwave... have all kinds of ADDITIVES in them, and far more than just flavor.  You don't have to add all those here;  just add flavors you want, without a bunch of additives or emulsifiers or preservatives!  : )

3)   Everyone's taste is different, but you can most CERTAINLY get to a point where you can build a popcorn as tasty and greasy as the one at movie theatres... Just pour melted butter over the popped product, and liberally add whatever seasonings make you happy!

Question 4

Is there a chemical smell in the bowl when you first open it from the manufacturer?

I didn’t notice a chemical smell when I opened my popper. I did wash it before using it. I love it!  Plain popcorn is my go to at night now. I don’t use any oil, and use Orville R. White kernel and it pops great.
