Great puzzle
I bought this for my teenaged daughter. She has it displayed on her bedroom shelf. It's made of a decent plastic, so we don't have to worry about bent or warped pieces. I really don't know if it is a puzzle or model. It has numbers on the back of each piece to instruct you how to put it together, more like a model. This is how she did it so quick. You could ignore the numbers and put it together like a puzzle for more of a challenge. She wants the entire set including Big Ben, Eiffel Tower, etc.

Fun project
Ours was missing a piece but we had fun putting it together and improvised the missing piece. It worked out.

Hard but good
It is said it is good for 12-99 years old. It is true. Empire State Building is a little too hard for my 9-years boy to finish by himself. But he and his friends worked together to get 1/3 done. Then the whole family worked together to accomplish the entire puzzle. The total time was about 5 hours. The puzzle is made of plastic. This makes it possible for kids to bend and mend without damaging pieces. Each piece is numbered with arrow to show the direction it goes. So it is even good for young kids at 5 as long as they can identify numbers to be involved. But putting pieces together is like a handcraft, especially for those pieces must be bent.Generally speaking, the difficulty level of Empire State Building is high because of many corners.

Puzzle?
As others have mentioned, not much of a puzzle when the pieces are numbered to tell you what order they go in... Trying to figure out how to get my team to put it together without "cheating" and looking at the backs, but don't think that will be possible..

I pieced together for my 4 year old son in about 40 minutes. He loves King Kong and has a plastic gorilla figurine climb it every day and hang on top of it. After a while, he knocks some of the pieces out, and I fit them back in. I even use clear packing tape to protect it for him so he can play as he will.

good toy, but not a good puzzle
I looked a lot for an interesting 3D puzzle that is still a proper jigsaw puzzle, not a building kit. I thought this was it (decent number of pieces, difficult looking pattern), but I was wrong. There is no difficulty involved in building this puzzle, other than sorting the pieces by number. The puzzle can only be built in a specific order, and all pieces are numbered according to this order. So all you need to do is look at the numbers, sort the pieces, then put them together according to the instructions.I guess you could try adding to the difficulty by just solving it flat (don't bend the hinged pieces yet), ending up with several small and very small 2D puzzles, and then putting everything together (which would require breaking up your 2D puzzles row by row). But the end result looks great (which is what tricked me into buying it). Pieces are very sturdy and everything falls into place just right. I do have a problem on how the hinged pieces are designed. When you bend them, you will basically stretch out the front facing plastic, creating a white crease on the edge. While it's not very visible, I would have preferred a design that doesn't involve irreversible damage to the pieces. Conclusion: If you want a cool looking 3D puzzle, this is a good choice. But if you want to step up the difficulty over regular 2D puzzles, get a puzzleball instead.

Loved it!
I loved building this. Each piece of this puzzle is number on the back, which makes for very easy assembly. Still takes a while and is fun because there are a lot of pieces and its a 3D shape. And after you build it, it makes for a great decoration. I highly recommend for anyone who loves puzzles or anyone who wants a cool model of the Empire State Building. Great Product.

Empire State of Mind
Thanks to being on sale in the catalogue pages of a well known chain store, the Ravensburger Big Ben and Eiffel Tower 3D jigsaw models are almost certainly a great deal more well known than the other landmark models in the series. Unlike those models, with their mix of flat pieces and bendy hinged pieces, this model has a couple of new components in addition - pieces that have tabs and slots in them. It's therefore a more complicated model than the other two (actually of any of the series) and requires a little more time and a little more skill to put together successfully.I feel the need to comment on the Amazon.com reviews that appeared on this page because I disagree with a number of issues there. Bending the edge pieces is part of the fun and I don't know how anyone could describe this as an annoyance - I'd be annoyed if they came pre-bent. The pieces in fact do hold at a 90 degree angle after bending. The locking tabs in my set did always hold, were at the right angle, and the model did not want to spring apart afterwards. All these negative comments in the Amazon.com reviews seem to come from someone who just didn't spend the time making sure they put it together correctly. Also, the numbers on the back of the pieces are a guide and anyone who wishes not to use them need only make sure the pieces are face up when they choose them. This is a more challenging model than the others in the series, but is top quality and if put together with the care it requires, you're not going to have any complaints about it.I have one complaint about the base it stands on though - the use of small tabs to hold it on there is disappointing as the slightest knock and it'll come off and risk toppling to the floor. Other than that, it's marvellous.
