This thing works great. Unpacked, threw a couple drives in and off we go.

This product is NOT HOT SWAP when used with a USB connection. Plugging or unplugging any drive causes the whole thing to reset as if you'd power cycled it, disconnecting ALL drives. It reprobes them again after 20-30 sec, but anything you were doing at the time is lost. If you have the OS on one of the drives (bad idea) it will crash immediately if you add/remove any drive. This is actually buried in the manual, but it should be the first thing on the first page.One other thing - some product shots of this or similar show it having a 120VAC power inlet on the chassis. It does not - it requires an (included) huuge 12vdc power brick. This is not apparent from the product pictures on the amazon listing.I have not tested it with eSATA connections because I have nothing that supports eSATA port-multiplier, which you need in order to access more than one of the four drive bays. I have not succeeded in finding a USB3-eSATA adapter yet that supports multiple drives, but anyway do you really want a long cobbled together string of adapters to get at your data?

External enclosure has problems with lag wherein video files pause and/or stop playing. Nonexistent support from the manufacturer. Would choose something else in the future.

This is the 3rd Icy Dock I have purchased. Sadly, they have now moved the power outside to a power brick (prefer the older models where it was internal). My older docks were used as both USB2 and eSATA at various times and worked well for media storage and media server drives. An earlier version of the USB3 dock was returned for poor compatibility with my iMac via USB3 but this version works well via USB3.
