Set during the 14th year of Chenghua Emperor's reign, Tang Fan, a sixth rank official and Sui Zhou, a decorated uniform guard, join hands to crush a conspiracy to maintain peace and order for the people. After working together to solve the case involving the Marquis' son, Tang Fan and Sui Zhou gain widespread fame and form a lasting friendship with each other. Although his reputation precedes him, Tang Fan remains honest and upright in his duty as a public servant and continues to rent a humble home. His landlord is found dead in her quarters presumably from suicide, but clues lead to suspicions of foul play. After the case is resolved, Tang Fan travels to Henan to investigate the sudden disappearances of people near the tomb site of the late Northern Song Emperor. When the culprit is revealed, it seems that he is but a pawn in a much grander conspiracy. As major cases continue to plague the capital and the local offices, Tang Fan and Sui Zhou work hard to unmask the mastermind who is pulling the strings in the background.

5 - 3 stars, I really, really, really liked this series!
I've watched it multiple times and it will be a favorite to watch over and over. I had a problem with the disks (the subtitles would stop). I discovered if I rewound to the point where the subtitles stopped, the subtitles would restart. The fact that I did not return the disks for a refund and would buy in a Blueray format, attests to how much I liked the story and the production. The subtitles are also not a great translation, but you can follow without distraction after getting use to them.Being able to watch on Prime Video helped with the subtitle issue. I've watched so often now it's like I am no longer reading. The acting is VERY good. Zhu Ya Wen, as Zhu Zhanji, is an amazing actor. I kept reviewing certain scenes, because I couldn't believe he was the same person. He is touchingly sensitive in some scenes and chilling cold in others. All the actors gave very good credible performances. I found myself closing my eyes and shaking my head at some of the characters' choices. We have all made decisions reluctantly and beat ourselves up for not doing what we thought was best, because we convinced ourselves the choice we made would work out.Sun Ruawei repeatedly does this with really bad and sometimes disastrous results. Tang Wei offers a credible performance of Sun Ruawei for me.I recommend watching the Prime Video offering. The subtitles are better than those on the version I purchased. If you have patience and will watch the video multiple times, I recommend the purchase. My sincere thanks to the seller who patiently entertained my question about the subtitles. I subsequently realized the seller could not assist me, if I did not want a refund. They asked me a question which led me to determine what I needed to do with the subtitles. The story, acting, production (beautiful photography and costumes) and the Prime Video version, I give five stars. The purchase, I rate as three stars because of the defect in the presentation of the English subtitles and one insignificant defected frame on disk four of part one.In summary, watching and experiencing this series was worth all my effort to view it! Loved it.
