For those who have seen and played both: Should I be looking for a store or other copy of the older game before they sell out?

I have played both. I don't think it's worth putting a lot of energy into finding the old version - certainly don't pay extra for it. Most people like the old monsters (the way they look) a bit better, but it literally makes no difference. The game-play is exactly the same. People should get over being a cat monster instead of a bunny monster pretty quickly.

Is there a way to buy just the cyber bunny and kraken figures and character boards or do i have to buy the first edition to get them?

Is the Halloween expansion compatible with this?

Yes, but you'll need to sleeve the cards as the backs are different.
