Glaze: The Ultimate Ceramic Artist's Guide to Glaze and Color Hardcover – August 1, 2014

This is one of the most inspiring and helpful art books I have ever read. As a self-taught artist in a wide scope of media, I rely on books when starting a new adventure. The area of pottery is daunting, to say the least. In most art books, concepts are either very basic and crafty or jump quickly to vague descriptions well into the range of ‘advanced’ with very little in between. The photos are exciting but they convey the completed works of those long in their careers with little guidance about the artist’s process. Much the opposite, the directory portion of this book, two hundred pages worth, gives detailed photos and descriptions of some of the most innovative contemporary ceramists. As a newbie to pottery, it does require understanding basic concepts and stages. But once that is attained, this book is a treasure trove of ideas and recipes.

I am teaching a glazing class this semester and I found this book to be very helpful. It is not so technical that a beginner wouldn't understand, but at the same time it is intelligent. It teaches glaze mixing and goes beyond that to different ways to use the glazes you made. Very informative for people who want to know about glazing pottery.

The first third of this book is a short (100 pages) but valuable summary of glaze history and glaze chemistry with how-to instructions for designing and testing glazes safely. The next 200 pages showcase the work of some of the best of today's ceramic artists. It's an amazingly diverse, beautiful, and inspiring collection of photographs. Another great feature is the bibliography, listing over forty classic books to read for more information. To truly master glazes you'll want to acquire and read several of the books listed there, but this is a great place to start. Ceramic artists and collectors alike will enjoy this well-designed book.

excellent work

Amazing book with a lot of examples from artists all over the world. Every ceramist shows a piece of art with the recipe for the glazing. There are examples of modern and traditional ceramic.The first chapters describe the theory of glaze and colours with a lot of pictures.For me, iit's a very helpful book.

Love this book. I'm a beginner so the technical portion of this book is over my head right now, but the artist profiles and examples are gorgeous and inspiring.

As an art student this book has been extremely useful to further learn about glazing, color, oxidation, etc. It's straightforward and an enjoyable read. I love the organization of sections and the compilation of different artists and their works and glazes. I definitely recommend this for anyone interested in ceramics, artists and art students.

I AM CRAZY ABOUT THIS BOOK GET IT AND YOU WILL BE INSPIRED TOO.. It can be very technical and in-depth for some, but the mystery of glaze makes the book even more interesting.

This is a really good book about the history and mechanics of glaze.... It is not a glaze recipe book which is what I was expecting. Though the book was great, it really didn't give me any information that I didn't previously find online. Nice read, gave me a deeper understanding of glazes, but didn't help me create better glazes. 3/4 of the book is dedicated to short artist profiles with a short description of their methods and a tiny recipe, which are not organised by cone or type of firing which I thought was a little annoying as most people only have one type of kiln and usually have a favorite firing range, so most people probably won't even find one recipe in here they will use.
