Q: $30 cheaper than a GTX 1080, the price is normally $400? whats going on?

The GTX 1070 yields better etherium mining results than the 1080 because the GTX 1070 utilizes GDDR5 memory where as the 1080 has GDDR5X. So gamers are running for the 1080's and crypto miners are running for the 1070's and 1080Ti's (not to be confused for the 1080.) Those building mining rigs will buy the cards in bulk. Most rigs have at least 6 cards which profits at ~$15USD/day. So if you can manage to get these at cost ($400) that'll be a total of $2400. That's a ROI (return on investment) of ~160 days or just shy of 6 months. Afterwards, it's all profit. And with the rising cost of BTC, LTC and ETH (not to mention other altcoins) it only becomes more profitable as time progresses. There are some that buy these by the dozens which creates demand and reduces the supply. That's probably one of the largest reasons why the prices are so high. Good news is, NVIDIA is releasing their 2060, 2070 and 2080 lineups soon. At least that's the rumor. Bad news is, there's also a rumor stating that the prices are going to remain high like this until around 2019. Some GPU manufacturers are producing GPU cards specifically for mining. They don't even have HDMI, DVI, VGA ports. If that gains in popularity then you should expect to see the cost of these cards drop a bit as the demand is reduced. However that's just a prediction on my part.

I have seen some third party used on the internet but have not try them as they only drop a few degrees, it is an hot card to start with.
