I had it up for a week and never saw a bird touch it. Finally took a foot long branch and bent it into a horseshoe and slipped it underneath the suet (through the wire frame) so the birds would have a perch to stand on, and now they are visiting it frequently. They just did not like the lack of a place to stand on.

Thanks to how deep it is the larger birds have plenty of time to get to the suet before it’s gone. We’ve seen all but one of the woodpecker species in our area since purchasing it.

This is a well built little suet feeder. Squirrels have managed to get it off the hanger but they were unable to get the top off. It's easy to refill and secure. The only drawback is it's quite small so the larger woodpeckers have difficulty accessing it. I placed a stick under the suet blocks to provide a perch for other birds.

Good suet feeder for the money

Other suet feeders were opened by wild animals, but this one has been fine and hanging in the same place. I love watching all the birds coming to it…..sometimes 3 at a time on the feeder!

This feeder is incredibly easy to fill. The handle is easy to maneuver out of the metal loops at the top of the actual food "cage". Then the top (roof) slides up off the loops. This leaves the 2 suet cake cages wide open to drop in the suet cakes. Then reverse: pop the roof back on over the 2 loops, manipulate the handle through the loops and Hang on the tree. I use a large metal gardening hook (used for hanging flower baskets) (not included) to hang them from tree branches. SO much easier and cleaner to use this type of basket/cage than the ones that clip shut, which is what I had before.Squirrels: I feat these aren't squirrel-proof. My son tells me that he has seen squirrels hanging on for dear life while hanging from the cage.Birds: I'm not an ornithologist but I can tell you that I've seen so many different types of birds all gathering at once at the basket. Great to have in the yard to attract lots of different types of birds.Super lightweight.
