Q: Disc is cracked. unable to use, downloaded drivers from intel but only recognizes adapter as a 1gb adapter not 2.5. do i need disc software?

After restarting the router and reinserting the Ethernet cables , the network card will restart to negotiate to the network conditions. Hope it can help you. Q: What chipset is this powered by I was wanting to us it in pFsense?

I don't use this directly with pfsense but it works with VMware after adding the Net-community drivers. I run pfsense in a vm from there and it works awesome. I get 1400 Mbps from Comcast that is fed to the other VMs over the 10g internal network the out to the rest of the network through a 10g SFP+ card.

Q: Does it fit and work on dell desktop xps 8900?

This should work well with the Dell desktop XPS 8900 if you have a PCIE x1 slot available. This does come with both the full height and the low height bracket, so you should need to install the correct bracket for your case and that should be it. The drivers might not be already built into Windows, but it will download the drivers from Windows Update once you have a network connection in order to enable this network adapter.
