Q: what kind of fabric and what count

This question and previous answer given are confusing. If it's cross stitch you're after (which is what you stated) there are two kinds. Regular cross stitch, (plain canvas unprinted). And there is "Stamped" cross stitch where the design is pre-stamped in color on cloth. Most stitchers prefer one or the other. You decide. There are advantages to both. It boils down to preference. Another factor is the cloth itself. The cloth used is called "Aida". It is reckognized by the uniform pinpoint holes in the cloth so as to guide you in making a perfect stitch every time. This comes in various sizes and colors for the backround picture you're creating. The main 3 sizes are 18, (makes very small stitches), 14, (medium stiches) easier on the eyes. And 11, much bigger stitch that doesn't look as refined. Of all sizes--14 is the usual standard preferred. I'm not an expert by any means. I just enjoy doing it.

I answered that wrong. It is printed cross-stitch, not counted.

I made this and it came with a paper directions and plain cloth. You should use any size cloth you wanted but if you choose a lower cloth count then you likely wont have enough thread. As there is only enough thread to stitch the picture on the cloth count provided in the kit.
