This one is a keeper.
Before ordering, I read all the reviews. If I relied on the negative reviews to make my decision to order, I would never be writing this review. The complaints about system hangs and touch screen issues lead me to believe these purchasers don't have a clue. I understand their eagerness to unpack and power up the new toy; but, have they never purchased a new computer before? They operating system and hardware were probably in the box for at least a minute (a lifetime for a computer) before shipment to a distribution center. After a purchaser powers up the computer it does a thorough system check: Operating system - are updates pending (typically yes). This process is time consuming as updates are downloaded, installed and multiple restarts take place. Hardware - are the drivers current? Many times they aren't. More updates, installs and restarts take place. So far, I have not experienced any Touch Screen issues as described by many reviewers.Any attempt to use the computer results in sluggish operation and hung processes while downloads and update installations are taking place. Drum your fingers on the desktop or tap your toes to pass the time. If given time to complete these processes, this product will reward you with outstanding performance. Or, maybe I just got lucky with this one :)I don't intend to come off as a know-it-all. My comments come from 30+ years setting up hundreds of computers. If I have totally missed on this one, I'll write a follow up and eat crow. NOT!!!

Great value! Works well for us. You need to do some things first.
Great value! Works well for us. You need to do some things first.I think that this laptop may be getting some undeserved negative reviews. Here is our experience: First, we were looking for an inexpensive, lightweight laptop primarily for word processing, checking email, and web surfing. We do not play computer games, except for a little solitaire. It does all of these things very well. But first, you must do these things: Uninstall the junk software. Anything you don't want just uninstall. Be sure to uninstall the HP Welcome program. It's a pest and uses your limited CPU resources. Turn off ALL the Windows 10 live tiles. Download CCleaner and DeFraggler from Pyriform. When installing DeFraggler pay attention and UNCHECK “Replace Windows Defragmentation”. You want to keep it. Go to CCleaner tools and disable Startup OneDrive, HP DeliveryAndStatusCheck, and HPMessageService. Go to CCleaner Browser Plugins and disable everything except HP Network Check Extension and Helper for Internet Explorer.Run CCleaner and delete all the extra files. Run the Registry Checker and delete all the bad registry entries.Run the Windows update service until there are no more updates available.Restart. Run CCleaner again and delete all the new extra files and bad registry entries. Then run DeFraggler. It may need to run overnight to defrag the hard drive the first time. You will find that it works just fine now. Many people know to do these things but many people do not.Have fun!

Best bang for your touchscreen buck!
This is what I would concider a very good midrange PC.This is indeed a HP N3540 with a 2.16Ghz processor and not the slower 1G model that some complained about. It comes with 4GB of ram, which can be upgraded to 8GB. Comes with Windows 10 64-bit. Comes in a charcoal black color and has a very nice texture to it. Boot loading time is average, I'd say. Has a small hard drive activity light on the side. Also has an HDMI slot, SD card slot, and 3 USB slots, as well as an ethernet port, camera/mic. This computer is a little sluggish at first, but there are a few things that can be done to remedy this. The battery is a little small and it's reported that it lasts 4 hours or less depending on usage, so I would suggest getting a backup battery at some point. Part of the battery issue is all of the bloatware that comes preinstalled. Thankfully, it can be uninstalled easily and may take about an hour to get rid of it all. Uninstalling all of the preinstalled junk leaving behind only windows programs will speed up this computer GREATLY! Also, I would recommend changing the virtual memory settings for extra speed, as well as disabling most of the startup processes. This can be done using any number of tutorials online. Get rid of the Mcafee antivirus and google a better option also. Finally, a ram upgrade to 8GB would be most beneficial. I have only used the touchscreen a few times, but I did not experience lag. The keyboard is smooth to use, as well as the mouse. I did not however care for the fact that there isn't an ability to scroll on the mouse pad, which is a big issue for me, but not a deal breaker. Based on that, the bloatware, and the battery size/life, I docked one star.Pros:Cheapest touchscreen money can buy for it's sizeUpgradable to 8GB ramNot incredibly heavy500GB drive90 degree charging plug wire (harder to pull out by accident)Beefy looking screen hingeCons:Too much bloatware preinstalledBattery life isnt the greatestNo scroll on the mousepadNeeds alot of tweaks in order for this to not be sluggish, just takes timeI bought this for doing school projects, Microsoft Word, and for facebook. I believe it is good enough for low multitasking providing the bloatware apps are removed, and the virtual memory is set up correctly. I will probably upgrade this to 8GB ram and also find out about putting a solid state hard drive in here for increased speed. It's a decent little computer.

Super inexpensive touch screen, perfect for our use.
I bought four of these laptops for use in our auction business. They are stripped of all the Microsoft bloatware to be used for a single application software package that manages our auctions. Two are for registration kiosks and use the touch-screen function. Another for clerking the auction, and one for the cashier. They are networked and have performed perfectly and without issues. Fast enough for our needs, and the keyboard is comfortable for our users. The touchscreen is nicely sensitive and works well.I'm not sure I'd be using this for gaming or CPU intense applications, but as a limited use machine, I can see no reason to spend a higher amount of money. This simply works. No bells, No whistles per se, but highly functional and I would buy more of the same if our needs expanded!
