Mediocre book
This book lacked audience awareness and often fell into self-indulgent rabbit trails that were unimportant to the overall narrative. Although writing in first person, the author seemed detached as if just relaying a series of events. Major editing was lacking and could have improved organization and flow, eliminated redundancies, and improved overall voice. A frustrating read.

Wonderful Read
Jeannie Light is a recently divorced woman during the 1970's who is called to serve the people of Graves Mill, and none sees her as more of an unlikely choice than she herself.Jeannie makes new friends, and adjusts to life in the mountains getting to know and care for the people as their way of live changes around them. She gives what comfort she can in times of suffering, and stands her ground when the time arises.Jeannie tells her stories with fondness, recalling days gone past, and the faces that made the mountains her home, as she brings the community together through gentle encouragement and new opportunities. Jeannie learns as she goes, and her story is not without some tales of setting the community at odds.Ultimately this is a heartwarming read about community and faith. I loved sharing in the humor and heartache along with Jeannie and her friends, Charlie, Jim, Pam, Tallis and so many more! A story well worth the read!Disclosure of Material Connection: I received one or more of the products or services mentioned above for free in the hope that I would mention it on my blog. God uses even small things for His great glory
This is an inspiring book filled from beginning to end with examples of strong people working together to accomplish God’s work in a small rural community.

Beautiful on the Mountain
I too live in the Blue Ridge Mountains so when I saw the setting of the book was the Blue Ridge I thought I would give it a shot. I very much liked the reading of a single woman on a private adventure. Well educated, once rich and now finding herself having to leave the affluent life for who knew what she saw herself raising sheep on the mountain in the Blue Ridge part of Virginia. She was an outsider to the community that had seen better days but she was inspired and lead by spirit to do good and help the people who had seen better times and their little inactive church. Trials and tribulations came to her and she listened to God for directions. Little did she suspect the 'sheep' she would shepherd would be the community of Graves Mill. I downloaded this book onto my Kindle from Amazon and would recommend it to anyone wants a good spiritual read for the summer.

Like listening to stories around a campfire
Jeannie Light's story of her reluctant mission to the rural mountains of Virginia is like listening to tales told around a campfire. The stories of the people she meets and the challenges she encounters are told with grace, humor and wisdom. Even though the events took place more than 30 years ago among a people with whom I'm not familiar, Light's applications are relevant and applicable to the faithful today. I found myself wanting to join her adventure in the mountains, and I felt the tug back to the comfortable life she'd left behind. While not a hard-hitting call to action, Light's story is more like an invitation to follow God wherever He leads, even if it's the last place you think you'll ever go.At times I got a bit lost with the chronology and the people, but overall, I was charmed by the story of a woman who, when her comfortable life fell apart, found her purpose in rebuilding a church body in the least likely place she could imagine.

For me... too high of expectations
I selected this book from the Tyndale Blog Network, based upon the synopsis. "If you enjoyed the classic novel Christy and the bestselling Mitford series, then you’ll love Beautiful on the Mountain, a real-life tale about serving God in unlikely circumstances. In 1977, Jeannie Light left her fine plantation home amid heartbreak and came to Graves Mill, a tiny hamlet in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Alone in an utterly new kind of life, Jeannie was determined to find the courage to make a fresh start."Christy and Julie by Catherine Marshall are two of my most favorite books ones that I have read so many times they are dog-eared, so this book had some high expectations to meet. The book didn't meet my expectations. I read the first chapter, then the second, and then the third. By the time I hit the fourth chapter I was skimming and looking for some sort of insight to bring me back in. To make me want to read the book. By the middle of the book, I flipped to the end.Maybe the problem for me was that it was told in first person. I never got to know the person, feel what she was feeling or even like her. I found her more annoying than anything, and that was only because I never really understood her. Therefore I am probably not the best person to give an accurate synopsis of the book. This may be the most awesome inspiring true story for some, but it was lost on me.I received this complimentary copy from the Tyndale Blog Network to give an honest opinion of the book.

... am a native of Virginia and found that I enjoyed reading about the rural part of my home state
I am a native of Virginia and found that I enjoyed reading about the rural part of my home state. The cast of characters Jeannie writes about kept me coming back every day. God truly wove a path for her as she ministered to this community. There were no coincidences. His provision for her and the people of Graves Mill was evident. But probably the most inspiring facet of her journey was how God used this community to strengthen her faith and help her see things both in herself and His kingdom that will forever shape her and the people of Graves Mill. There is something to be said for letting go and allowing God provide, as only He can. Very uplifting story.

Beautiful on the Mountain
I love books especially those that are free and based in the Christian faith. This book grabbed my attention and I read it over a few days. It is not the usual book I would read but I'm so pleased that I did. Full of stories it shows God love and faithfulness to those who decide to do life His way.

An inspiring account of God at work.
Jeannie tells her story humbly and honestly. God worked through her and the people she lived amongst. Her divorce settlement is a long way from what it would have been these days, so she had to rely on God for all her needs. I enjoyed meeting Jeannie and the people in the mountain hamlet.

Interesting account of an isolated community.
An unusual story about a woman who becomes a minister to a village community almost by accident.

An interesting true story of a rural church
A good read but it ended without finishing. I want to know more! The subject of this book would be of special interest to any rural church attempting renewal.
