Does this game have an ending? Is there some set of expansion packs in some order that would allow the story to be concluded one way or the other?

There are expansion packs that follow the events of the movies, so you can have closure in that way. Otherwise, there isn’t really an “ending” aside from the fact that there are no new, official expansions being released. Everything FFG is putting out now are reprints. That being said, there are fan-made quests over on BGG so you could potentially play forever.

Does this differ much than the original core set? I've already purchased two of those. Would this add anything significant to the game?

If you have two of the original core set, this won’t do anything for you other than the new box and a few campaign cards. I’m pretty sure you can just print off the campaign cards or even just read them off of your phone, there are only three and they don’t get shuffled or anything.

How do you interptet the card sleeve recommendation on the back of the box? Card game rookie here.

I do not recognize the company they are recommending to buy sleeves from. There are just over 300 cards, so 4 packs of 100 or 7 packs of 50 standard size will do it. I suggest Mayday Games 2.5" x 3.5", but there are dozens of companies to choose from. I use Mayday Games more economical 100 pack. The 50 packs are great with thicker sleeves therefore more protection, but I do not require them for LOTR cards.

How do you know what expansion packs are compatible with this game?

Any expansion works. How it it set up every cycle has a deluxe box that starts of that cycle. Every small expansion (like 15 bucks) comes with a few player cards and an adventure. The delays box comes with 3 adventures and more cards for like 30 bucks I think. Each saga expansion has 3 adventures and player cards. There is an order taking you through the hobbit to return of the king, with each book having 2 expansions (8 total). There are a bunch of standalone adventure packs that are just that, only an adventure and no player cards. Check the fantasy flight games website to see how each cycle works. FFG did say they will be reworking these expansions from 7 products in a cycle to only 2, one with only player cards and one with all the adventures. As of Feb 28. 2022 they haven’t announced any particular cycle. Personal opinion if you just got into the game and only have the core box, go with the shadow or Mirkwood cycle. The deluxe box is the core box so you only have 6 packs to get.
