Q: How do you get the water in the pot? Do you need to take out the black insert and put the water in?

Yes you will need to lift the insert and pour water into the white pot. I placed the whole thing into a ceramic pot and still remove just the insert and put water into the white pot. I love these because when I am on a trip I know my plants will not die.

Q: One of the images shows it sitting in a clear plastic tray; does this mean it leaks?

I have never had a problem with them leaking. The work great.

Hmm.. not sure. I wasn't aware the vendor made a clear insert. I will need to check into that one but you can contact the vendor and make the inquiry. I've only ordered them with the black insert.. hope this helps.. good luck.

It depends how much spider plants like water. These pots keep the soil moist as long as you keep water in the reservoir.
