Can use this to check if the floor is properly leveled? How - just place it on the floor?

I would mark 1 inch off the floor and use the laser level to see how leveled your floors are. Normally I would just roll a ball on the floor to find the low point. Hope that helps

putting can lights in ceiling making sure they are straight...

If you want to "draw" a straight line whereever (wall or ceiling) to aling whatever you want like light fixtures on the ceiling... An obvious solution to use a chalk line whitout tainting your ceiling..... Still need two reference points to "align" the light line....
