I like the aluminium finish. It doesn't feel flimsy. It does what I want it to do which is to rip and burn audio CDs, after a previous purchase failed. It will also play DVDs. As to it's long term durability, I don't yet know.

I know why laptops no longer have these installed but it is a nuisance. So it's good to have this in order to watch my dvds on my laptop or upload my cds so I have them on the move. I suppose it's an old fashioned way of doing things but I prefer to have something tangible than everything be online and streaming. This helps with continuing that.

Loaded up fine on my iMac, but just wouldn't play anything, went through ten or so DVD's, and could only get one to play. I tied the same DVD's in my broken player that you have to hold the loader in to make it work, and they all played fine! Faulty design.

Inasmuch as I appreciate this design and functionality, I am also worried for those that are not good in technology configuration simply because the instructions of this device is not clear enough.In actual fact it is external and CD and DVD Rom which performed the duties its meant it can rewrite bith cd and dvd which is nice but the initial understanding of the functionality is the challenge.

Portable CD/DVD driveI have been thinking of buying one of these as my laptop does not have an optical drive at all.This one will both read and write CD and DVDYou can put a video DVD or CD in and play it with your already owned Software.No software comes with it and it is plug and play.On Windows 10, it recognises immediately it is plugged in.Apparently if you have an Apple computer you would need to install a 3rd party software if you wish to play video disks as the software installed on MACs wont see Video disks (I cant test this as we dont have a Mac anymore)The drive comes with a dual cable for power and sending recieving the digital signal.There is also a Power cable seperately so you can plug it into something that does not power it, itself.(This might be useful for Raspberry Pi use where powering through its pi usb ports sometimes causes problems.)Lastly there is an adapter to allow plugging into a USB C socket and then using the USB A cables supplied which is excellent as it allows its use whether or not you have a USB C outlet already.I was able to read my old CD and DVD files saved from previous laptops and PCS even those over 15 years old.Inserting a Video DVD, I went into VLC which is a free program for windows , I believe unix also has a version and was able to watch a video with sound by choosing to play from video.You dont need extra sound cables.This is a useful addition to a modern laptop .It just works as it is supposed to.It is not a DVD video playing machine in itself.There is no HDMI output.It wont work with your TV as far as I know and apparently not with a chromebook either.Well worth having if you have backed up media over the years and your new laptop hasnt got its own drive.Very pleased with this. Would recommend.
