Q: Does this have a metal mesh tray or is it solid plastic

Solid plastic and very sturdy. I purchased two of these. Very easy to fill with birdseed. I highly recommend these.

Q: Will this feeder work with peanuts - whole or shelled?

This bird feeder should work fine for shelled peanuts, but I don't think the opening for the food to come down to the tray is not wide enough for whole peanuts. The opening is about 3/4" or just a little bigger, so I think whole peanuts would get stuck. It is a very sturdy feeder and is easy to fill.

The bird feeder holds between 3-4 cups of bird food

Q: can this feeder be pole mounted?

Helen, the bottom is flat without an adapter. But you can probably screw in a flange easily enough and then attach that to a threaded pipe for a pole mounting.
