Nasty, horrible, delightful nonsense
Here's a slim little volume of short-short stories that Surrealist Leonora Carrington told to her young children, illustrated by selections from her sketchbook of the paintings she made on their bedroom walls. Funny, bizarre, cartoonishly violent at times, with a helping of the potty humor that young children love so much, they remind us just how naturally Surreal the child's experience of the world is, before necessary (but sometimes stifling) socialization sets in. A minor but charming sidebar to Carrington's astonishing body of creative work to be sure -- not vital, perhaps, but illuminating in its quirky, surprising way -- recommended!

Aptly Titled
Delightfully odd and silly. Carrington clearly understood the joy that ridiculousness and absurdity bring to children. Though I wasn't at all bothered by them, parents should know that there are references to poop, pee, and smoking.

Highly recommend. Children adore the absurd
Pure magic. Our three year old was completely captivated by the illustrations and the prose. Highly recommend. Children adore the absurd, bizarre, and slightly dark.

Not really for most children I know
I don't think many children will get much from these stories as they are mostly just strange with no message or moral. Some remind me of JamesThurber's fables but others leave you hanging. I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it unless you are already a fan of Leonora Carrington.

Surreal Tales for Kids and Big Kids Alike
I bought this book for myself, however if I had children I would read these short tales to them immediately.Leonora Carrington has managed to capture in these small tales the underpinnings of those existential debates we all have within ourselves tinged with elements of surrealism. It is quite fascinating and the illustrations made me laugh out loud on occasion.Einstein once famously said that if you want your children to be intelligent then read them fairy tales. But I have to disagree and say you should tell them the stories from this gem of a book instead.

Beautiful, childlike and involving.
This is imaginative and creative. The images are fun and beautiful. The stories have a simple, childlike quality to them that draw the reader in.

Brilliant.
Fantastic, love it, bought an extra copy as a gift for two young nephews (3 & 7) they loved it too.

Charming and Odd.
The Milk of Dreams by Leonora Carrington is such a strange book – even though it is for children. The short stories are odd, have a fairy tale quality to them, and are surreal to the hilt. These stories aren’t the usual fare that authors serve up for children. They are dark – with children’s body parts missing, some sewed back, and a story also of a vulture getting stuck in gelatin. Carrington read these stories to her children, and that’s how they came to be. In fact, the illustrations in the book are also from the ones that she made on the children’s bedroom walls. This book is bizarre, and at the same time delightfully odd and silly. I was captivated by all of it – the drawings, the prose that was crazy, and the nonchalance of it all, in the sense of it being read to kids. There is John, who has wings for ears, and “Humbert the Beautiful”, and my personal favorite being “The Horrible Story of the Little Meats” – a fantastic fairy of a woman who doesn’t like kids, and ends up feeding them bad meat, to then do what she wants to.The Milk of Dreams is a read that is short and yet stays with you. I could reread and reread it some more. Maybe this time I will pay more attention to the illustrations as well. All said and done, it is the kind of book that could be read easily in less than an hour and like I said, go back to once in a while.
