Kipling dug deep
This classic enthralled me fifty years ago, and I re-read it again now with great pleasure. Instead of the unfortunately typical imperial Englishman's blindered view of all the "lesser races", Kipling understood how the Hindus, Afghans, Bengalis, and countless other peoples and castes viewed the English and each other. The sheer quantity of ethnological research that went into the tale is staggering. It would be interesting to know what his sources were.

โKimโ by Rudyard Kipling
Hard to evaluate a novel by the youngest and first English language winner if the Nobel Prize (he was 42 years old). All I can say is that I learned a great deal about India at the beginning of the 20th century. The adventures of the young boy take us all over India and introduce us to some fascinating characters. Considered a childrenโs story, it could fascinate readers of all ages.

Publisher Joke is not funny
Kipling's Kim is a masterpiece, a shining star among several very good roughly contemporary stories of youth, including those of Twain and Dickens. The protagonist Kim reflects the author's own cultural agility, which, though substantial even in the "Politically Correct" age, may have been quite extraordinary in his own time. Kipling has had detractors through the generations among those who prejudge him by his membership in a certain group in a certain era. 'Listening' to his voice, however, one finds that he transcended his innate bounds and educated the world on the realities of colonialism. This Large Print edition was purchased as a gift for an elderly vision-impaired mother who has always loved reading, Kipling one of her favorite authors. Just inside the front cover was a "you may also like" list of titles. They had nothing to do with Kim or Kipling, and apparently were treatises on profanity. One title was just the f-bomb. The "you may also like" list is inappropriate in a hardcover classic novel, but this is just offensive.

A return to a childhood favourite
KIpling is going through a down phase at the moment but that is our fault, not his. Leave your prejudices behind and enjoy this jewel.
