When I first found out I had Type 2 Diabetes, I decided to get a blood monitor. So, brief look on Amazon and opted for the Codefree Kit; one big factor in my decision on choosing to get it from Home Health was the fact that I could buy it without the VAT directly - sometimes I believe you buy these things at full price then have to claim the VAT back, which I'd never have gotten around to doing. Anyhow, I received it in just a few days and was excited to see my blood sugar levels. Once it dropped through the door, the packaging was hastily dispatched and my kit opened. First, impressions were good as the kit comes in it's own case with sections for each component. In the case was the monitor, 10 test strips, 10 lancets, one lance and testing strips. There was nothing to set up and after a quick look at the instructions was ready to go. First job; unscrew the lance end and insert one of the lances - these come with a snap off cover on them so you don't inadvertantly stab yourself - slot it into the lance and tighten the top. You then pull the end of the lance out to prime it; it also has different penetration depths from 1 to 5 (I just have it on the latter). Once done, you simply take one of the test strips and slot it into the monitor. Next step, do the finger prick which is just a case of putting the lance on your finger and pressing the release button, click, bit of pain and hey presto and small droplet of blood. You then simply, hold the monitor strip to the droplet and there's a tiny channel that sucks the blood into the strip. The monitor then has a 5 second countdown and displays the result. So, what's it like? Well, for me now it is indispensible and in fact I've been getting a little obsessed with using it. It has helped enormously and one of the major things I use it to track is the impact of eating certain foods on my blood sugars - at times using it four times a day (eat something, wait a couple of hours for the levels to peak then check). I've stopped doing it so often now and generally check it once, sometimes twice a day. And because of the memory function I can also look back at my numbers. The big thing is that using it has made a big difference in that I've now dropped my base level from 11.5 to 8.7 (without meds)and hopefully keeping an eye on this will take it even lower. This comes with me whenever I go anywhere and really does enable me to see the effect of foods and drink on my sugar levels, I love it. Something you should be aware of when buying this though. You SHOULD BUY the Extra strips and lancets at the same time because you'll be out of the first batch really quickly and then chomping at the bit waiting for the next order to arrive. I'd suggest the 100 packs of each.

My husband was diagnosed with diabetes type 2 in January of this year, which came as rather a shock as he is not overweight and we walk our five dogs for long walks each day........... In France things are a little different to the English care for diabetes and we do not get offered testing strips - rather there is a routine three month blood check. Feeling that he wanted to be in control of the diabetes, rather than the diabetes be in charge of him, we decided to order a tester kit and do some testing of our own. There are so many testers on the market and we chose this one, I have to be honest, mostly on price but also the reviews. After a few false starts of putting the strip in the tester the wrong way and so on, we decided to read the handy little booklet that comes with it - and hey presto within 5 seconds the result showed on the screen. This handy little device can also give a 7, 14 or 30 day average result and with the appropriate soft wear can be transferred to a computer. It is conveniently small and compact with its own carrying case. We ordered at the same time, extra codefree strips, which are a very good price from Amazon uk for a pack of 50, I think if you order this tester you would do well to order extra strips and perhaps lancets too. Being able to keep a result "diary" by testing first thing in the morning and then two hours after each meal, for a few days and noting down what has been eaten and what exercise taken etc. can help to build up a good picture of which foods suit you and your diabetes best. It will also be a good resource to take with us on the next doctor appointment, so he is able to see results taken throughout the day and over a period of time. All in all we are very pleased with this tester and would recommend it to anyone who wants to be able to simply and easily keep a check of their blood sugar count.

Easy to use after one or two practice attempts for a first time user of these types of devices. Instruction booklets are good. No release button on the lancet device as far as I can tell. Still, easy to use.

This glucose meter is really good value, particularly if you are buying your own test strips, as they are very much less expensive than for other meters, a third the price of some. Sadly some medical practices now restrict test strips, particularly for type II patients not on insulin. This may not be the most accurate meter, though it seems pretty good, but if you need to regularly check your blood glucose, perhaps several times a day, particularly if you are paying for the strips, this is certainly good enough to keep track of things. I was having great difficulty with my glucose levels until I read, "Blood Sugar 101: What They Don't Tell You About Diabetes". So I realised I needed to go onto a lower carbohydrate diet and check my glucose just before and about 2hours after each meal, to ensure it was under control, preferably no more than 8 mmol/l. Hence I am using a lot more test strips than I am allowed, at least 6 a day, but it is a great help and with this meter and I can now afford the test strips. The result has been very successful in improving my glucose levels and putting off the need for insulin. I have found the lancing device that comes with this meter is perfectly adequate and about the same as any other, although I use other lancets that I already have, so I don't know why some have a problem with this one. If you want the USB connecting lead to your computer and the program to save, analyse and display your readings, this is not yet available trough Amazon, but can be obtained directly from Home Health (UK) Ltd, for about £23, who also sell the meter on Amazon. Just Google Home Health (UK) Ltd, click on Glucose Monitor and scroll down to "SD Codefree Diabetes Management Software Cable". From there you can order the cable and download the program to your computer. If you are having difficulty reading the small User Guide, then from Home Health, or directly from SD Biosensors, you can download a PDF copy of the guide and read it enlarged on the screen, or print an enlarged copy of the pages you need. There will similarly be a PDF copy of a handbook for the computer program, though that is currently being updated and should also soon be available through Home Health, or SD Biosensors. I don't yet have the cable and have not yet tried out the program, but will update on that later. I initially had a problem loading the program and obtaining the cable, so contacted SD Biosensors in Korea, who sorted out the problems for me. In the mean time this meter has been a great help in controlling my diabetes.

Despite the negative reviews about this product I am very pleased and bought another one for my mother, because the test strip for this meter are the cheapest on the market . First I want to commend Home Health (UK) Ltd as a good and correct seller. They were very fast and accurate. In terms of electronics engineer, I can say that the SD Codefree Blood Glucose Monitor is a quality and designed to be easy to use. I'm sure those users who define the product as inaccurate, do not know how to measure properly. This is a simple electrical resistance meter. Blood glucose changes the resistance of the active surface of the test strip. From experience, I found that, if you follow some simple rules, the results will be accurate and repeatable, and they are: 1. Use the test strips before the expiration date 2. Keep the test strips properly as described in the instructions 3. Hands should be washed and dried before measuring 4.Do not touch with fingers contact and active surface of the test strip when you put it to the meter. Hold the test strip in the middle. 5.You don't need of big blood drop, because excess amount of blood additionally changes the resistance of the test strip and the readings are high. 6.Do not dip the test strip in the blood drop. This is a big mistake. The window of the test strip by capillary method draws the blood and should be fully. Immediately after the window of the test strip is has been blood filled, the test strip must be removed from the blood drop. The best case is when the droplet is just as much as is necessary to fill the window, but you need of experience to be achieved that . If the window of the test strip is not full up, the readings will be lower .Despite of all ,you need to know that all blood glucose meters have max error 20%. When the real blood glucose is low ,the error is small . In the most cases, the measurements are accurate, if the rules are have been followed. If you have any doubts you may calculate within what limits is your real blood sugar by this way: If we have measured 5mmol / l and we have a doubt that it is very low then the maximum possible value is 5x1, 2 = 6 mmol / l. If you have any doubts that is very high then the minimum possible value is 5/1, 2 = 4,17 mmol / l. The real value is in the range [4.17 to 6]mmol/l. If you want to have max accurate you may to average at least 3 measurements. I hope I was helpful.

I bought the SD Codefree blood glucose monitoring kit after being diagnosed with pre-diabetes in January 2014. This piece of equipment has been invaluable in assisting me to both reduce and control my blood glucose levels. At the time of my initial diagnosis (11 weeks ago), my doctor told me that there was no need to monitor my sugar levels as they would check it annually. (clearly the NHS is strapped for cash and are not prepared to fund the necessary blood testing strips for type 2 diabetics ?) Though I was informed that the local GP diabetic team would be in touch with me, to date I have received no more advise or help, other than an eye examination, (retinopathy), which was OK. (I learnt quite quickly that the only way forward was to do it myself - I purchased a couple of helpful books and researched on the internet - I also found diabetes UK forum to be quite useful) I am therefore so pleased I decided to buy this monitor, it has enabled me to reduce my fasting blood glucose levels from around 7Mmol/L at initial diagnosis to an average of 5.5Mmol/L over the last 50 days. (initially I tested four to five times a day, now I only test once, unless I am consuming an "untested" food/drink. I have compared the accuracy of my monitor with a friends Contour XT meter and the differences in comparable blood samples are negligible, (less than 0.3Mmol/L). My friend pays £42 for 100 test strips, I pay £14 for mine - in my opinion its a no brainer. Finally I have found the seller of my choice Home Health (UK) to be a highly professional, reliable company that I can thoroughly recommend. I hope this review of my purchase is of some use to others who may be in a similar situation. Latest update (26th October 2014) So having used this monitor for over 9 months I have reduced the number of readings to two a week (waking). The monitor has worked faultlessly and I am convinced that it has enabled me to improve from "pre-diabetic", in January 2014 to no indication of diabetes over the last 8 months. My average "waking" blood sugar reading is now 4.2 mmol/L. If the NHS provided "at risk" patients with this inexpensive monitoring tool and showed them how to interpret, (and alter diet accordingly), the readings, they would save the UK a fortune. When will they learn to identify and treat the "root cause", rather than treat the symptoms with drugs such as metformin and statins? Certainly one of the best purchases I have ever made.

I'm one of those people who don't have diabetics, but just wanted to test the level of glucose in the blood after eating each meal (out of curiosity, as I've never done it before but wanted to know if I have any problems related to that). Even though I didn't have any experience with this kind of product at all, I didn't find it difficult to use. In fact this little device is perfect as the instruction manual is very clear and the monitor is very easy to use. I bought it with 50 replacement strips (I should have bought 100) and found it excellent for my needs. Just in case if you are wondering: the whole procedure of measuring the level of glucose takes maybe 5 seconds, it's not painful at all, feels like a small, one second bite by some bug (I'm using setting number 2 and sometimes 3, on the lancing device), and the result is pretty much spot on. The whole package seems to be good quality and the carrying case offers a nice protection to the monitor. Side note: Just to be sure, 30-60-90 minutes after each meal, I've measured the level of glucose in my blood at least two times - and it actually gave me a good average values. I've noticed that there could be a slight difference between 2 measurements, taken 10 seconds apart, so you should be aware of that (nothing major, something like 5.6 in one case and 5.3 mmol in the other but it may make a difference for you). Anyway, this is a very good product, even for a complete inexperienced guy like me.

A friend of mine has recently been diagnosed as type 2, so I thought I'd like to test my own glucose levels, when I wished, rather than just the annual "road test". (I'm pushing 70.) I'm delighted to report this machine is as easy to use as a toothbrush almost, once you get the hang of it. Insert strip into base of machine, prick side of finger to get a droplet the size of a small pinhead, then touch the other end of strip to the blood drop - and five seconds later it's done. Although there are many many positive reviews here, there are also some reporting inaccuracy and inconsistency. So I did my own testing. Three consecutive tests from different fingers gave 5.2, 4.9 and 5.3. A little basic arithmetic shows a mean (average) of 5.133 and an error less than +/- 5 percent. For a machine of this price that is excellent in my opinion. I will be ordering strips and lancets now. The machine is a doddle to set up for date, time etc. It stores the last 500 readings, dated and timed. It gives averages, even differentiating between pre meal and post meal if you wish. Or you can go legacy and write them with a pencil in the supplied diary :) I hope I never have to test my blood in earnest, like so many here. But if I do, I think this machine will be the one. I'll be showing it to my diabetic friend.
