Replaced a noisy impeller. Back to quiet hum!
I have had a MarineLand filter running on one of my tanks for six years, and after cleaning it the last time, the impeller was super loud. I ordered this and as soon as I replaced the old one, it was back to a quiet hum and working perfectly.

Great replacement product, but I really wish it were better designed.
Came brand new in package and works great. My only gripe is about the design of the impeller because there is no way to easily lubricate it or clean out any errant sand particles. I know, the workaround is to not have sand in my tank, but the fish I keep greatly benefit from having a sand substrate and rocks are a PITA to keep clean. Were it to have a better design that allows ease of lubrication and cleaning of the impeller itself, this would be a 5 star rating.

How to fix your old one
If you are hearing a lot of rattling or rumbling noise from the filter, or it is just loud and the loud is not a water sound, its probably a worn out rod. What happens is the impeller spins millions of revolutions over time and wears out the stainless steel rod. You would notice that there is some play in between the hole of the impeller and the shaft. There should be no play. If you have a magnifying glass of a jewelers loop you would be able to see the rod getting thinner the closer it is to the impeller. You can replace that rod for a lot less than buying a new one. Here's what you need to do.1. Get some needle nose plyers and pinch the rod just below the end cap, if the end cap is at 12:00, have the end of the plyers at 4:00, and then pivot the plyers up to 2:00 and this should push the cap off.2. Remove the shaft, at this point there would be the other end cap on the other end of the shaft.3. At this point you can do 1 of 2 things, get some Vaseline like others have said and cover the shaft in it and put it back together (this will get you by for maybe a few days) OR3b. Go out and buy 2.5MM stainless steel rods on amazon, they come in 10 packs 300 mm long so you could make 30 of them if you needed to.4. Use your old shaft to determine the right length and cut exactly to that length using cutters and a grinder or dermal tool to smooth it off. Just make sure the length is right.5. Use Vaseline on the rod and put it back together with the end caps on the ends. You will have plenty of material left over for additional shafts.I did buy this one new because I needed it in a pinch, but I saved the old one and bought new the new stainless steel rods so I have one ready when this new one goes bad. I will just keep replacing the shafts and never buy a new one again.

Cheap fix for a loud filter
Before buying this I tried adding vaseline to the impeller but it didn't help. I was going to buy a whole new filter but decided to try this. I'm so happy I did. It came in the mail after two days from my order, I replaced the old impeller with this one, turned back on the filter and no noise (other than water running through the filter). Considering this is the only moving part in the HOB filter it's a cheap and easy fix to keep this thing running for years to come. I assume I'll have to buy another one at some point but I most certainly will.

Stop that rattling sound now!
It worked like a charm. I had a rattle sound from the filter, turns out this part can get worned out. It’s not easy to tell but easy to see when you compare a new rotor to the old one.

It saved the filter but at a high cost
Was on the verge of throwing away the filter head but this completely saved the whole thing. Only major gripe is the cost as it's only the size of a AA battery but cost almost $25 where as a new filter was like 45$

Exactly the part I needed
The part arrived quickly and was exactly what I ordered.

Fit my Filter perfectly
These are color coded, look at the color of your impeller and order according to the color of the one in your aquarium filter. Mine was making a ton of noise and when i replaced the impeller it is now as quiet as a mouse.

Very useful and effective.
I use it to replace the damaged one. Useful but costly.

Drastic reduction of noise, but way to expensive
Works like a charm, very quiet compare to the old one, but it's too expensive for what it is. I bought this and the bearings and I wonder if I should not have just bought a new filter all together...

Makes your filtration system quiet again.
Have you been running your Penguin 350 filtration for several years and it's now making grinding noises? Purchase this replacement, or two. It's quite costly, but there aren't any alternatives.
