why does it sound like it's grinding coffee beans when it runs?

Mine was quiet. I could barley tell it was feeding...

Can this run by itself or do you need the apex to run it?

You DO NOT need an Apex to run it. If you don't run it with an Apex you can have it powered by an electrical outlet. If not, the Apex will power it. You do need an Apex if you'd like to automate your feedings and also power down pumps, return, etc.

Will this work with Apex Jr controller?

yes, as long as you are under 4 module. Apex Jr is limited to 4 module expandable.
