Greek-English Lexicon, Ninth Edition with a Revised Supplement

Liddell & Scott's Greek-English Lexicon is an excellent reference book for Ancient Greek on down to the Koine. Remember, however, that Liddell & Scott is a lexicon, not a dictionary. The Ninth Edition with Supplement is well over 2000 pages of fine print. It will give you half a page on 'de' and if this is the sort of exhaustive thoroughness you need, this is absolutely a book you want in your library.If, on the other hand, you are reading a text and simply want to know what 'de' means, there are other texts that might be easier and less cumbersome to use.Liddell & Scott's "An Intermediate Greek-English Lexicon" should certainly be considered; while condensed, it is still 800 or 900 pages. Richard J. Cunliffe's "A lexicon of the Homeric Dialect" is another excellent text for those interested in Homeric Greek.Another text I find quite useful is Georg Autenrieth's "A Homeric Dictionary for Schools and Colleges" (Translation by R.P. Keep). While Autenrieth gives an attestation or so, it is primarily intended to provide definitions and uses of Homeric Greek words and is extremely useful and handy when you encounter a word you don't know. And unlike Liddell & Scott, it provides the six principal parts for the verbs it defines.Many of these texts can be viewed online. Entries can also be compared using the Perseus Digital Library (call up a text, click on a word, and then select the lexicon or dictionary for their entry).

Everything the scholar of Greek needs! This version of the text has clear, legible print, unlike some printings I have heard from. I haven't used it that much since I got it, but the binding seems to still work well only a few months in. Definitely an invaluable and long-lasting resource I'll use for years to come. Note though, if you haven't already, that the book is quite heavy and large. I believe it is the biggest book I own

To spend serious time with this book, you need a magnifying glass. But it's worth the extra purchase, for those who savor the language and wish to know the most that can be known about the first written appearance of each word. One is consequently drawn to those sources, and therefore, to the life and times of the original text. A must-have for lovers of the classics, of Greek language, and of classical antiquity.

I realize that Greek lexicons aren't for everyone, but if you're a serious student of the Greek New Testament, the Septuagint (LXX), and the early church fathers, then the 9th edition of Liddell-Scott is a must have resource. This edition also has the supplement as an appendix, which you will not have with Accordance software. Be that as it may, there is something refreshing about looking up things "old school" with your thumbs and fingers rather than a click or swipe.

Got this magnificent book in a great copy from a seller called RentU. RentU certainly came up with the best copy as it is literally as good as new. So well done to RentU books for their quality products and care in packaging and efficient postage system.The book is in itself a great work of scholarship and it is a must have in any serious library, simply as an example of the paradeigma of scholarship of a literary subject.For a lover of the Greeks and an admirer of the profundity of their systems to hold this book equates to a religious reverence of a bible believer and beholder.A truly awesome and reverend possession - not to mention pretty handy for use.

This Greek-English Lexicon is the latest edition published by Liddell Scott and the ultimate Ancient Greek-English Dictionary suitable for anyone interested in this language pair. For me, it is by far the best in the market and the one all the other dictionaries are compared to.

As an ageing student of Greek, an aged pensioner only half way through the second year of a university course in the subject, I decided to ask my wife to give me the big lexicon for Christmas. Some say it is best to wait until more advanced study is required, but waiting several years at my age is perhaps overly optimistic. Generally I find the Intermediate version very useful, and I have it sitting on top of the Big One. I am sure the large version will be of considerable use, but it won't be travelling with me. I also have the small version which fits well into my luggage.The use of Victorian English does not worry me (we can all change "hither" and "thither" into more likely expressions), but the smallness of the print and its lack of clarity is a bit of a problem. I have decided that when I use the unabridged edition it will be in the daytime, and on sunny days at that! I am very thankful for a little magnifying set-up that I made when using Reading Greek as a textbook- very clear but very small print. My spectacles help too of course!A CD-ROM version may be useful to some people, but I much prefer books for frequent use. The computer is in a different room from where I do my real work. I couldn't stand having one of these monstrosities looking at me as I study Greek.So far I am very positive about the large version of the lexicon. It can hardly have five stars because it has some inadequacies, but it is better to have it than not. I might write another review in a year's time and give a revised view.................................................................Now, almost one year later I can say that I have found it very useful, especially with post-classical words, and more especially with some vocabulary found on inscriptions and papyri.

I've heard it's huge and heavy, but I honestly didn't expect it to be this huge, this heavy. It's the size of A4 paper plus the slightly bigger hard cover. and it's around 6.5-7 cm thick, with typical dictionary density (yes you know the type). I guess I can use it for bench press when I'm not studying AG lolIf you don't have OCD about tactile object like myself, just use perseus (that's a website in case you never heard it). I still use perseus if I just want a quick search, but I do absolutely have to own a physical copy. Yeah, I know, that's a problem. Plus I feel like purchasing the physical edition is the least I can do to thank the authors. This lexicon and perseus are literally my lifeline in studying AG.As for the quality, pages are pretty thin to the point it looks semi-transparent. It's to accommodate the around 3000 pages of content in one bind so I don't mind. But I do wonder how long before wear & tear starts to show.Shipping speed was alright considering I have it shipped all the way from German (amazon warehouse) to Canada, but I didn't expect DHL to charge me additional import tax, I thought amazon covers all that? anyways I just prefer paying everything in one place if possible. okay now I'm rambling. sorry. I'll see myself out. Happy studying!
