Great gift idea

As with every book I've read by Wilbur Smith, this one was excellent. But it wasn't his best work. In spite of that, it kept me wanting to read more and more . . . until there was no more. The story took a while to develop and several times I wouldered if I had read the book before, but I hadn't. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes adventure stories that are well written and enthralling; and a little knowledge of Wilbur Smith's talents is a plus.

Some interesting characters, as always with Wilbur, and colorful scenes of action. But, the plot is not very strong and not ever really get going, in my opinion. Typical Smith type love story interlaced very well with the action. It did keep me reading, hoping to get to the usual Wilbur stuff, that never seemed to get there. Still, recommended for the die hard Wilbur Smith reader to learn a little more about deep dark Africa, but not one for an introduction to Smith.

Historical novel of rare depth-

Wilbur Smith gives us a fast-paced, exciting story of Africa in The Dark of the Sun. If you enjoy stories that are action-packed you will like this one. Well drawn characters and well told situations. This is one of those books about Africa that anyone who reads about Africa as a habit should read.

Excellent story teller

I have yet to read a bad or even so-so Wilbur Smith novel. He is the consummate storyteller and deserves any, and all, accolades for his work. Although, I gave it four stars instead of five, it has nothing to do with his talent. It is a genre preference on my part. I preferred his novels on the Courtney family and his series of books on ancient Egypt. That said, I would highly recommend "The Dark of the Sun" as a wonderful read.-Daniel Lance Wright, author of "One Day in Lubbock", "Phobia", "Annie's World: Jake's Legacy", "Paradise Flawed", 'Helping Hand for Ethan", and "Six Years' Worth".

I enjoyed the movie way back in the 70s on TV. I always enjoyed Rod Taylor in films...a very underrated actor. This was a real step up in his acting, as an almost anti-hero. The book is worthy of the movie and vice versa! A very powerful story and adventure. If the movie were to be redone today, I don't think it would do justice to the book.
