The hardware is Thread capable. This is being evaluated for development later this year.

With its ethernet port, can power be supplied by poe rather than the usb-c connection?

It's USB-C, but you can use a POE-USB splitter to power it via POE from your switch or router. That's what I do.

What does the wifi do? can we now support wifi devices or is it only for hub-to-hub??

Wi-Fi is a means to connect to your LAN. The hub must be connected to your LAN for you to set it up. The two ways to do this are Ethernet and Wi-Fi. This has nothing to do directly with the smart devices in your home. A Wi-Fi smart device is connected to your LAN also.
