The time is not fixed. The timer is intelligent, it does not matter if you start with cold or boiling water - they have modelled how an egg cooks in a microprocessor. I recommend that once you have finished cooking, you run the timer under the cold tap to put it to sleep, and then store in the fridge - this maximises the battery life (battery not replaceable) PS, the beep tunes are not that easy to recognise!

How do you replace the battery ?

You don't... Well looked after they last years of regular use. When it's flat, get another one. Run it under the cold tap to 'switch off' quickly after use, and then store in the fridge.
