What chipset does this use, and is it compatible wth Ubuntu Linux without manually installing drivers?

I don't know the chipset, however, I do know 100% that it does not work with Ubuntu, Mint, and a few others that I've tried.

So good, I'm ordering a second one

I got this to replace an older BT that was a 5.1 interface. World of difference. I used to get interference constantly and occasional drops altogether w my headphones. This is so solid. No interference at all in days, the pnp connect was effortless on Windows 11 (had it installed and connected in 2 minutes), and I swear it even sounds better. I'd recommend this to replace any BT less than a 5.3, and moreso if you don't have a BT. It took some years, but this is finally the BT level I've always wanted.

Plug and Play, it works.

Worked out of the box, didn't have to do anything. Windows 11, latest build/update. Was able to connect to a speaker on the other end of the house and get clear audio.

Since it has a single antenna, it shows a longer range of coverage than other dongles without antenna. There has been no technical issue while using it 2 days.
