The Vienna Philharmonic's New Year Concert, which has taken place annually since 1941, is possibly the most famous musical event in the world. Broadcast live from Vienna's Musikverein to dozens of countries, the concert has a worldwide audience in excess of 50 million people. Equally impressive is the time it has taken for Deutsche Grammophon to produce this two-CD live recording--just 27 days.

The 2003 concert, conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, was the usual Straussfest, with favourites such as The Blue Danube, the Emperor Waltz and the Radetzky March. For the first time, music by Brahms (his Hungarian Dances Nos. 5 and 6) and Weber (Berlioz's orchestration of Invitation to the Dance) were on the programme; they fit in perfectly.
