Q: Does this prop stand by itself (free standing)?

NO, they are just clear plastic sheets with palm tree images. The water scene in the back is not part of it. I was pretty disappointed as I was going to use it for my party then ended up not being able to do what I wanted. They need to be much clearer in their description.

yes. difficult, if not impossible to completely remove all folding marks

Q: How do you cut them out around all the branches?

Palm trees are printed on clear thin vinyl. I cut them out with sharp scissors slightly open and glided around outside palm shape. Then I used a craft knife to cut more of the clear film away between branches. Very Ez to do with a proper cutting surface underneath your work. The clear film is very transparent, I found I didn't have to do too much detail work since I placed them on the beach background. You couldn't see much of the clear outline
