what is the total width including the mounting brackets? mounted vertically

I just measured both of mine...to the outside edges of the wall mounting 'plates', the total width is approximately 28" (meaning the 'width' to mount the brackets will not line up with the wall studs).  Because these mirrors are fairly heavy and the 'tilt' (which increases the stress load on the mounting brackets/pivots), the wall mounting brackets cannot merely be anchored into sheetrock/drywall.  Once I knew exactly where my wall mounts were going to be located (vertically and horizontally), I used an oscillating saw and ripped-out a 5" high by (width required so that the ends of this board could be anchored to adjacent wall studs 'wider' than the width of the mirror) piece of the drywall.  Then I ripped (on table saw) a piece of pine lumber slightly thinner than the thickness of the drywall and used drywall screws to anchor it to the wall studs.  Once anchored, I pre-drilled the holes I needed for the 2 mounting brackets and then 'test fit' the mirror to ensure everything was lined up properly.  I removed the mounting brackets but then put similar diameter, but longer, screws back into the holes and let them protrude from the wall.  Then used drywall compound and fiberglass bonding screen over the board and adjacent drywall, let it dry and then built up the drywall surface over the board so that it was uniform with the wall.  You can finish the wall then as you desire (I tiled mine with travertine mosaic tile), then removed the screws from the wall.  Now when you go to mount your mirror(s), you have a solid 'base' for the screws/mounting brackets and mirror installation should go smoothly.  Actually mounting the mirrors to the brackets is a 2-person job (one to support/hold the mirror in place and the other to tighten the pivot brackets.
